cruise control lights
cruise control lights
I have a 1998 ford f-150. My problem is my cruise control works fine but my lights on the sterring wheel are out. Do the buttons just pop off to see the bulbs or do i have to remove the airbag to work on this?
Could be the LEDs in the switch, or it could be the connector to the steering wheel column is starting to pull apart.
The circuit for the steering wheel illumination is a Light Blue w/ Red color wire and black ( ground ).
If you pull the knee panel off, and the steering wheel column cover, there should be a brown 6 pin connector. Take a look at this connector, to see if it is pulling apart.
You can also meter over this, to check if voltage is making it to the sliding airbag contact ( clock spring ).
Start with checking the connector, prior to removing the switches to repalce the LEDs.

That is what i was wondering about, if the tops of the buttons just popped off, or if i would have to take the airbag out to get to them. I didn't want to try to pry off the top of the buttons and screw them up. So are you saying the leds are in series, they all went out at the same time.
It's not likely that even 1 LED burned out, so replacing them probably won't fix anything. Pull the airbag (it's totally safe, and you don't have to disconnect anything) and test the wiring.
Don't turn the key on while the airbag is unplugged or you could set codes. Set the airbag FACE UP under the truck while it's out.
