93 F150 dash gauges not working
93 F150 dash gauges not working
All of my gauges in dash work EXCEPT my alternator and tach..
Where should I start, I checked the connections on the distributor and the alternator they seem to be fine, and the charging system is working fine, could it be that the gauges are worn out?
The odometer reads 315,615 so I am sure they could be worn out as well .. any ideas?

The volt gauge is wired thru the ig.sw. to a fuse that also powers all the other gauges (F.17 - 10A) and goes to ground G200 (passenger kick panel) which also serves the speedo, cruise, RKE, & anti-theft.
The tach is fed by the same fuse thru a different connector in the cluster, which also serves the warning lamps (ABS, 4x4, LOWRANGE, SRS, CEL) & grounds at G201 (driver's kick). It receives its signal on the W/Pk wire from the coil - not the distributor.
No, the gauges don't wear out.
So it sounds like the fault is inside the cluster. Pull it, take the lens & blackout ring off, pop out the gauges & then reseat them to break up any corrosion on their terminals. Use brown paper or a pink eraser to polish the connector terminals for the film circuit. For more info, click my black Bronco in my sig & read the captions in the Low Fuel Light album.

hey steve I was looking through all of your links below and see alot of parts listed, but no prices, are they parts you still have and for sale or parts you had and just a log of them all..
Also can I swap my 93 interior over to a 88 cab? I like the 93 better but the 88 is alot cleaner..

The ones in the Spare Parts album are for sale, but I don't post prices. E-mail me thru my profile here or on SMN & include links to the pics you're interested in.
You can swap most of the '92-96 interior into a pre-'92 cab, but not the dash or steering column (without a LOT of work).

I pulled the dash apart but was having trouble getting the shift indicator cable to come undone, so I stopped working on that and fixed my 4x4 floor shift instead.
is there a way to disconnect that so I can pull the instrument cluster out completely and work on it on my bench?

hey steve, I finally got around to doing something with the dash, now that the truck is sitting cause the tranny is out of it.
I pulled the cluster all apart and the reseated all the gauges,, there was no corrosion and all the contacts were squeaky clean. I will try and reinstall it and see if it makes a diff.
I installed a lower mileage cluster and the same things do not work on it either, could it be something else causing it not to work?

Is the white paper sticker still on either cluster? Is either '94-96? Does the engineering number etched into the film circuit on the back of either cluster start with "F4..."? If so, that's the problem. You can only use '92-93.
I am going to switch the one I picked up back out with the original one to see if the gauges work now..
help with my gauge cluster
To steve 83 i am new here but u sound very knowledgeable. I just got a 93 f150 xlt. The current gauge cluster does not have a tach so i went to the junk yard and pulled a cluster from a 94 bronco. All works but the alternator gauge and the oil psi gauge. They all worked with the old cluster and i was warned about it possibly not charging when i switched the cluster. My question is how or can i make the alternator gauge and charging system work and whats up with the oil pressure not workin. Any help would be great. Should i put my old cluster back in and add a aftermarket tach or can i make this one work. Thanks
