Windshield Wiper Issue

I've got an issue with the wipers in my 92 F150. I've searched, and read some other posts, but no answers were very helpful with my particular situation.....

One day, out of the blue, my wipers stopped working. They won't work on any setting, and the washer won't work either. To start, no fuses are blown that I can find.

I can hear a click coming from the wiper control module (WCM) every time I move the selector switch on the steering column. Since a signal is obviously getting from the switch to the module, I don't really see that being the issue.

Since I hear a click, I'm guessing that atleast some of the relays in the control module are being activiated. I disconnected the wiper motor, and I don't read an open on the motor winding (get about 4 ohms if memory serves), so the motor seems OK. With the leads disconnected, I tried to measure voltage at the leads when I turn on the wiper switch. I still hear the click, but no voltage shows at the leads.

I'm thinking this has to be the wiper control module, but I can't explain the clicking. I opened the module up, and there are no fuses or anything inside. I'm wondering if there is a master relay in there that isn't engaging to give power to the rest.

If I had a schematic of this module, I'd be pretty much set as I bet I can fix it. I figured I'd post here and see if anyone had similar symptoms, and found the solution or if someone has the schematic.

Also, I've been looking for a replacement module, and the only one I can find is from Ford for $160. Anyone have a better source?

If this isn't the problem, I'm thinking wiring, and that isn't a pleasant thought.....

Thanks.

Danny

Danny, I'm not going to be much help, since you seem to know what you are doing and have looked at all the things I would have looked at. If it's not the fuse, and you're getting no voltage to the wiper motor, then the proiblem is between the fuse box and the motor.

Have you checked for voltage at the "input" side of the WCM? Since you hear a "click" there, it sounds like you HAVE got voltage, so this is more of a confirmation test that a signal is getting to the WCM. Is there a way to test for voltage at the "output" side of the WCM? These two tests should really tell you if the problem is in the wiring upstream or downstream from the WCM.

If it's not the wiring, I'd say it HAS to be something in the WCM. Have you looked for a replacement in a junkyard? I know, it's a pain, but getting a salvaged one is going to be a LOT cheaper than a new one at the dealership.

Good luck!

I think it's the WCM too, but I haven't found one for a reasonable price to switch out....

I plan on looking at the voltages in/out of the WCM to see what's going on, but without a schematic it's going to be a pain. I'll have to figure it out as I go, and I may end up being wrong since it probably isnt' working right. Looks like someone on here would have this schematic?

Thanks.

Just as an added note - I know some people are reluctant to try a "used" part from a junkyard. I've used this source at least four times, all with good results. The big problem of course, is finding the right junked vehicle in the first place. Too bad they don't "organize" junkyards!

I know nothing about 92 Fords, but can you take the WCM out so you can "bench" test it?
