1999 f-150, 4.6L, red battery icon came on while driving. However, the battery voltage analog gauge shows normal. Voltage measured at battery with motor off was approx 11.5 volts, after starting it was about the same. Measured voltage at alternator ( I think) and same thing, 11.5. Alternator gone ? or is there anything else to ck ? Thanks !

 

Sounds like your battery is going bad. You should have 12.6 volts to run the system properly. Is your battery original?

The battery reads low because its partially discharged.

Put an external charger on it before installing the new alternator. If you try charging that battery in its current state with a new alternator, the new alternator may not last very long.
