Remote Power Mirror Problem

Neither the left or right power mirror on my '02 FX4 SC will turn in. They'll go up, down and out, but not in. I assume it's the switch, but would like to confirm that before I replace it. Is there a way to test it? Could it be something else?
Also, what's the best way to remove the switch panel from the armrest?
Thanks

pop off the bezel on your door panel that has the switches and check to make sure the wires get power if they do u may need to pop off the mirror or mirror covers and probe the wires and see if they get power when you try to use the switch....

i've got an 01 and both sides do the same thing-you don't get in-out or up-down, you get out/up or in/down when you try for either axis. i'm thinking its the switch but i set them where i wanted them so i'm not in a hurry to investigate

If one axis of the mirror works, you have power to the switch, so that is good back to the CJB ( central Junction box ) fuse. You also appear to have a good return side to the switch, as the Axis controls share the return side ( in one direction, this is ground ) for both the up/down and L/R functions.

The switch axis uses the same set of contacts, and directs them to the correct mirror when selecting the left / right switch.
If both mirrors don't move in the same axis, it really seems to point to the switch as the problem, rather then the harness or mirror itself.

Here is the diagram for the power mirrors :

The direction section of the switch reverses polarity to the mirror motor, so by a quick check with a meter this can confirmed.

Pull the trim panel up, and make note of where the Red and Yellow wires are at on the switch ( no pin numbering on the schematic ) for the left mirror L/R function ( Dark Blue and Yellow for up/down function on the left mirror ).
You will unplug the harness from the switch, and put a meter ( in the ohm setting ) across the wire pairs, and push the switch in either axis direction for the function being tested ( up/down or L/R ). The ohm meter should read 0.00 ( or real close to it ) when the switch is activated in either direction.
If not, this seems to show the switch is not working in that direction ( as long as you know you are on the correct pin pairing, and have a good connection to the pins with the meter leads ).

You can confirm meter placement, by putting them on the known working axis, and testing the same way as noted above, with the wire color pairs.

This should get to you a point of isolation of the problem, any questions post back, and let us know, myself or another member will ty to take it a set farther with testing suggestions ( i.e. manual powering of the mirror axis wiring harness, to test motor function )

Good Luck, let us know what happens

I currently have this problem and its REALLY annoying. I am 99% certain, like everyone said here, that it is the switch in the door, but I havn't bothered to order a new one or mess with it too much.

If this many of us are complaining abou it, then it must be a poor switch design.

Anyone know the Part Number for the switch? It cant be more that $25 I wouldn't think?

I ended up taking the control switch out and tested it. It was not working so I took a small flat screw driver and unsnapped and seperated it. It was very tarnished. It has a insert inside that slides out which has the contacts on it so i removed it and cleaned with a pencil erarser then spray with contact cleaner I did the same thing on the pin contacts where the harness plugs in. This all took about 20 minutes but now works great and I am sure it was worth the time compared to the price of a new control. I hope this may also help someone else.
