Thumbs down Question about my dome light

I have a 97 f150 off road.

About 4 months ago, my dome light stopped going on when I open the doors. WOrks if I flip the switches, just not when I open the doors.

Any idea the fix for this. Thought fuses, but why do they work when I flip the switches. Doesn't work on the dashboard controls either.

help???

How 'bout the bulb? The switches you are flipping that do work are for the lights on the sides.

Thanx for the quick help. DUmmy me didn't even look, but I thought it used to light up the side lights, is there a middle light too? I thought when it worked, the side lights came on.

man, when wife gets back, i'll have to go check....wasn't thinking about a middle light

Heh, thats funny. Yeah there are three bulbs all together. Middle one goes on when you open the doors or with the interior guage light dimmer thing. The other two you have to flip the switch directly on them to turn them on.

Did you fix it yet??

You'll also find that the switch that turns the center dome light on is actually housed in the door handles. They're famous for freezing / binding up. If you do a search in this forum on the subject, you'll find some great advice on getting things un-stuck.

This is the same one I was going to suggest ( is it the door latch or handle ? ).

I think the fix was spraying WD-40 in the door latch itself, but try the search on dome light jsut to be sure.

Yeah

Wanna know the funny part. I teach auto diagnostics......teach them to look for the simple problem first.....did I do that???

noooooooo, had to go on to skipping that for something much more difficult.....I just know thatwhen it went out, i looked up at it and was thinking there were the two side lights only....

months without a dome light for a $5 bulb..

damn i'm dumb

thanx for the advise on the door handles
