2005 supercrew keypad problems

hello all,

i got a problem with the keypad on my drivers door. the truck is an xlt that i just bought. it has power windows/doors and remote keyless entry. however it did not come with a keypad on the door. i really miss this so i bought one of those stick on one ford sells. i got that one programed just fine and everything works. well i got the idea to buy one of the outside door handles ford sells with the keypad cutout to see if i could get the stick on one to fit in it so it would look like it came from the factory with the keypad. when i got the new outside handle it already had a keypad in it with the wiring harness. so i took my door panel off and found that there is the factory harness inside to plug the keypad into. i did that , but still cant get anything to work. i went into program mode by turning on/off the keys 8 times, then tried to enter the 5 digit factory code on the credit card in the owners manual. nothing, keypad wont even light up. my owners manual did have the 5 digit code on the credit card, i even checked this code on the box behind the rear seat to make sure it was right. any help or suggestions from any one would be great. i dont really want to use the stick on one because it is big and out of place looking.

I've never tried adding it to an '05, but there may be something that's locked-out in the GEM that the dealership (using their fancy-schmancy equipment) can enable in the system. That's my best guess, although I honestly don't know.

I just perused the schematics and service manuals.... there's nothing listed that looks out of place.... You might want to check and see if the black wire is making a ground connection.... the buttons close the signal to ground in the door.... if the black wire isn't connected, that may cause the buttons not to work.

My best guess.... sorry.

thanks for the reply.

i checked the brown and the black wire, they are both making a good ground. dont remember the other colors but out of the four, three of them have power to them with the car turned off. i even took my keypad out and took another 05 crew cab apart that came with the keypad. my keypad works fin in that truck. the power and ground wires are giving the same readings in both trucks. the only thing i did not do was take his keypad out and try it on my truck. since its a friends truck i didnt want to take a chance on breaking something. the bad part on my truck is i cant even get the keypad to light up, let alone work right.
now what , anyone?

Not sure what you did wrong, I picked up the handle for mine, plugged it in, and it worked.

First thing I did before I even took out the original was to try the factory code with it dangling in the door.

Is it possible the wireless has told the box to ignore the hard wired???

door

Did you have to take off your inner door pannel to replace handle? I removed my inner door pannel and ended up snapping the plastic retainer. Anyway when I had my door all apart I went to the dealership to order a keypad with handle and they said that I could not order it, only the sticky pad. Curious as to how you got yours. I have an 04 XLT and there is a harness for the pad to plug into.

I've got an '05 XLT not sure about the '04. Have you looked at one side by side with yours. Or are you trying to use an '05 keypad on a '04? I know you said you plugged it in so I'm assuming the plug worked, but is the wiring the same between the '04 and the '05. Go to the dealer and ask to look at the wiring diagrams for the truck. I've never had one turn me down yet, and you can compare them. Some will even let you make a copy of hte page.

The only problem I had was I had to pop the two bottom speaker mounts out so the pannel would lift up and clear. They just pop into two square holes. It's the type that the screw spreads the fingers when they go in. The pannel itself is primarily held in by the plastic hooks, the bottom screws are to keep it down, and the two behind the handle are to keep it from ripping when you close the door.

My dealer also told me you HAD to use the sticky pad since there was no hole in the door. They couldn't seem to get it that it was a door handle swap.

I did have some fun figuring out where the retainer for the wires popped in to keep it clear of the glass. If I remember right it went into the top of something besides the tin in the door, but that's been a while.

Best of luck, let us know how it goes.

door

There is a bolt behind the door handle that holds it to the metal. Not the two that hold the lever. My question is how do I fasten the bolt back on when putting back on the door shell? There is no way to get a wrench in there?

On the '05 you have two bolts accessed directly through the inside of the door, and a third that comes in from the edge of the door behind one of the two rubber plugs. I think it was the bottom one.

Don't forget to release the two rods before you try to take the handle out. It's been in since it was put together and will likely stick a little releasing from the door. I had to rotate the handle a little when coming up out of the hole to get it out completely.

Did you get the keypad to work yet? I wouldn't go through taking the handle out until you get the keypad working.

anyone get the keypad to work yet? From what i understand, you have to go to the dealer and have them activate it. I have already swapped mine for the LT handles that already had the keypad but have not had a chance to get it to the dealer to have them "activate" it. If anyone got it to work with or without a trip to the dealer, please post.

05' Extended cab

Didn't have to get mine activated, just plugged it in and it worked first time.

Is it possible you "locked it out" installing the stick on pad?

Have you tried re-doing the remotes without doing the stick on pad and then trying the hard wired keypad?

I would think they'd have some kind of "either or" setup, unless you want to put a stick on on the passanger side and have the hard wired on the drivers side???

Might be something to as the dealer, can you have a stick on and a hard wired?

I nevered tried the stick-on. That was the original poster. On my XLT, i bought the handle with the keypad, then plugged it in. the keypad didnt work. it did not even light up. checked all wiring and it looks fine. from what i read on these forums, no one else was able to just plug in unless they had the keypad originally. You must of been one of the lucky ones. if anyone knows how to activate it without a trip to the dealer, please post.

Only thing I can think of was that I added a couple of fobs after I installed the handle / keypad. Also did some other programming at that time.

Is it possible taking it in and out of remote programming tripped it???

Good luck!

The only other thing I can thnk of is that it's powered seperatly from the rest of the system on another fuse. Maybe some accessory I have that you don't. I've got a pretty basic XLT. But with back up sensors, power sliding rear window, and heated mirrors, no power fold.

Have you went to the dealer and looked at the wiring diagram? Mine will let me if I ask the service writers on the drive.

If it's not even lighting up I'd guess there's a fuse or relay not in place, but then it could just not be activated. Then again, if it wasn't installed from the factory, maybe a connector on the OTHER END isn't plugged in. Who's to say that one guy on the line plugs all the connectors in reguardless, and another only plugs in the one that build needs?

I'd take a look at the diagrams before paying for a service call.

So you want to add a keypad huh?

Bottom line:
- if you have an early 2005 truck built without the keypad in the door handle and then want to add one, you need to go to the dealer to have it turned on. The latest software available for their diagnostic tool will allow them to turn it on in the Vehicle Security Module. Sorry, that's just how it is.

- if you have a later built 2005 truck (not sure of exact date), you can just plug in the new keypad and it will work (you will need the 5-digit code from the Vehicle Security Module behind the rear seat).

- you can add the stick-on keypad to either early or late built 2005 trucks and then program it to your truck just like a remote transmitter. Just remember to program the keypad and your existing remote transmitters during the same procedure.
