remote starts

Just bought an 04' F-150 5.4L. Im happy with it so far. I went to the dealership and asked about remote start kits. The guy said it would be about $250 to purchase & $250 to install. Wow! Ive read some comments about aftermarket kits and I am torn. I dont like the idea about leaving a key attatched to it so it will work. Or the trouble of paying someone else to install it. Ive also heard they are somewhat tricky.

It almost sounds like I need to bite the bullet here and have the dealership do it. Has anyone gone this route? What was the cost? Is there a good alternative?

I just installed a cheapo depot alarm, keyless entry, remote start system with a PATS bypass kit. The total with the kit was 140 and I installed it myself. If you're comfortable with electronics I'd say go for it but purchase the wiring harness adapter from Bulldog security it's worth the extra $13. You can make all your major power connections out of the truck then just plug this in to your ignition wiring harness. You need 2 keys to program the bypass module but you don't need to leave a key in the truck. The programming is described right in the Owners Manual. Good Luck and I'm no professional just a hobbiest but I felt it was a pretty easy install.

I got the silver remote start kit from www.oemfordparts.com. It was south of 200.00 as I recall, including the PATS bypass. Install is not bad at all, if you are good ith digging around with the electronics. There are a few posts here that have some info on it, and the gotcha's found ( that is where I got the info from ).

Good luck.

you should be able to get a good aftermarket unit for around $250 installed at a reputable security dealer. Probably about $100 more to add an alarm with it...

Dealer installed stuff is always way over priced.

The parts guys at the dealership here must be high. Theyre telling me it takes 4-5 hours of labor to put this thing in. They also keep giving me different prices and part numbers that dont work in any search. I tried to look it up on fordpartsonline.com but couldnt find it. It seems to me that since its ford part it should almost plug in to the existing harness.

Do you have the part#? What is rke, vss, rest?

the ford remote start and their security systems are not factory ford parts. They are made by one of the after market security manufacturers and have the ford decal stuck on it...

I put in a cheapie AutoCommand I bought off eBay for around 60.00. Weird tho, in my 97 XL I didn't need the PATS bypass. I guess that was for the more of the XLT and above line.

As far as the remote starter, it has a few things to be desired, but I installed mine in about 2 hours, and it works just fine. I did solder all connections, not just the wrap and tape as I have seen many of the instructional videos.
