Question FogLights Off/Head Lights On Modification

I've searched the forums looking for a mod I've seen before, but can't find again for a '03 F150 with auto lights.

It enables you to turn on the fog lights from the parking light position. Or, to make a short story long, its a headlight switch mod that enables you to turn on the fog lights, but leave the headlights off, and/or a mod that leaves the fog lights on while the brights are on.

Does anyone know how to do this on a '03 F150 with the auto lights feature?

I found this how-to, but I am not sure it will work with the auto lights. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Here it is without the auto light feature:

Thanks!

Okay, my bad... after some more searching I found what I was looking for in some really old posts.

And from what I can tell it can be done with the AutoLight feature.

Sorry! Thanks!

I just got around to doing this mod this weekend. Not too hard at all. Really just need to take your time and pay attention to how you cut the ramps for the switch.

I really like the mod though. Nice being able to have my fog lights with the auto lamp feature.

Good luck.

That is correct. It *CAN* be done in conjunction with Autolamps.

Okay, here's a really dumb question:

What kind of splice connector are you guys using?

All these posts and how-to's say there is no cutting of wires involved, but I can't seem to find a splice connector that has two wires coming in and two wires coming out. (Only the kind with two in, one out.)

Am I reading the instructions wrong? Do they make a 2wire in 2wire out splice connector? What is it called?

I've been reading about this mod for about three years now, but just recently got an F150 with foglights, and even more recently talked myself into taking my new baby apart, hehe.

Thanks again so much!

I used one of the 3M splice connectors and snipped off the 'blank' where it only allows 'one out'. That way two wires can lay side by side in the splice connector and all you have to do is clamp it shut.

That one side is purposely blanked off such that if you had one hot wire coming in that ended, you could lay it in there and splice it to something that wasn't hot that continued on, or vice-versa.

So, long story short, it's not a big deal to snip the end off that splice connector so that two wires can lay in there.

Glue? Oh... you must have cut the faceplate off.... I didn't do that. I just filed it down with a mini-file (hobby file) without cutting the melt-welds.

Glad it works. Congrats!

FogLights Mod

RockPick
I'm looking at some of your old posts regarding the foglights modification. I'm an idiot when it comes to electrical work. In fact, I've never spliced wires together in my life [see, I told you you were dealing with an idiot]! I've already done the filing w/i the switch and have that set to go. Its this electrical step that I can't figure out. After splicing the #2 and #12 wires together, are they to be plugged back into the connector? And in order to splice wires together, you have to strip the the wires, right?

I hope you can find the strengh to try to explain this to me. I apologize for my incompetence!

ClosetRedneck,
Your definitely "out of the closet" now!!

To make the connection, you DO NOT have to cut either of the two wires (#12 and #12). You DO NOT have to splice anything, and you DO NOT have to remove them from the connector in any way.

What you DO need to do is this. Unravel a bit (inch or two) of the black tape holding the bundle of wire together behind the connector. This free's up the loose wires a little bit (gives you some room to work). Now, find the #2 and #12 wires, and arrange them a little bit so they are next to each other. DO NOT pull them off the connector, do not cut, do not splice...

Now, go to radio shack and buy a "16-18 guage Tap-In wire connector". Ask the salesman, he will find it for you (it's in the drawers with electronic componnets). It will be a little blue connector that has two holes for wire to go into, and two holes for wires to com out of. Only, one of the holes will be plugged (with plastic) so you can't put a wire all the way thru on that side. (You will understand what I'm talkin about when you have it in your hand). Take a small drill bit, and drill out that blocked hole, so now the connector has two holes that go all the way thru. Now, lay the two UNCUT wires(#2 and #12) into the connector (open the connector to do this). Laslty, with a plyer, apply a small amount of force onto the metel thing that sticks out. Basically your are squeezing the metal thing into the two wires which makes an electrical connection between them without cutting them in any way. Flip the plastic cover over the connector, it snaps in place. Done.

Good luck, it's VERY easy.

The only thing that I would add is that they're sometimes called 'Splice Connectors' as well...

I would elaborate more but CCarrea really hit the nail on the head with his explanation.

I'll try to help out anyway that I possibly can if you have any additional questions. Let us know how it works out!

Outstanding help you guys, I really appreciate it. I just finished the job up and I'm psyched to finally have those fogs working when I want them. I also learned a thing or two about electrical wiring and the different connectors there are out there. Everything works great except I wasn't paying attention when I put the damn **** back on (after the mechanical steps were complete) so my **** is upside down! Its 9:30 Sunday night so I'm not going to take it back and fix it...not now anyway...its time to sit on the couch and watch some football. Thanks again for the outstanding help.

2000 Sable

Hey guys, this is great information. I am going to try to apply it to my 2000 Sable as well. I have the same switch as you do, as well as what looks to be the same wiring setup. This will certainly make the Taurus/Sable guys happy over their board.

Thanks for the info.

Also, has anyone noticed, but after you do the parking light splice to energize the fog light relay, do the fogs stay on when you click on the bright lights? Because if they do that is doubly great. I drive in very dark areas, and having the brights plus the fogs would light up the road that much more. I am assuming that before the splice the low-beams energized the fog relay, but when you switched to high beam you lost it.
