Computer Software ?
Hi Beastie,
Yeah, how dare you hijack this thread?!?
(Just kidding!!)
OK, all kidding aside, we're really most familiar with OBD-II packages as that's what the vast majority of vehicles we do these days are, so I don't have detailed knowledge of what's available for OBD-I aftermarket diagnostic software along the lines of something like Autotap.
The easiest thing to do is just go hit a couple of search engines and search on "OBD-II diagnostic," and then check out each tool/setup/package for any OBD-I capabilities as well; then you'd have the most versatile tool. There have been a couple we've come across that I remember seeing mention OBD-I capabilities, but I can't remember them off the top of my head at the moment. Just do a search for OBD-II stuff as described & take a gander at all the viable tools & OBD-I capabilities among those choices, so you'll have *both* OBD-I and OBD-II capabililty.
On OBD-I's we just use the NGS (Next Generation Star Tester, made by Hickock, $2K), but NGS is not practical for the "end user" due to it's expense. If someone just needed to do a quick code scan, a $39 tool will give you "beeps" and/or flashing lights where you count the number of audible beeps or # of light flashes to tell you the stored codes on those OBD-I's, but you'll want much more capabiilty than just beeps & flashing lights for stored codes, you'll want to see sensor data, etc., so just do the search as described above & you'll find what you need pretty quickly.
Good luck!
