Thinking of getting a tuner, programmer or chip

Hey guys, I pretty much don't know anything when it comes to this stuff. I read the sticky and that just confused me. Looking to increase speed and get a little better gas mileage, what do you guys suggest I get?? I have a 1998 2wd f150 on 35's. thanks in advance.

I'm not too worried about mileage but I know a tuner makes it better. I have stock gears for now but I'm getting new gears pretty soon, and I drive it normal. Not carzy or anything, just wanted a little more speed out of it.

You will need a new VSS gear to correct the speedo/odo for different tire sizes and rear gears.

Well I've already gotten used to the off speedo so that's not really a problem, unless a tuner will fix that? I'm not really sure lol.

The 97-98 trucks use a mechanical VSS gear to control the odometer and speedometer. So a tuner can not make an adjustment in that aspect. You'll have to search on how to do the math on what tooth count new gear you'll need, but the gear should only run maybe $20 at the most and will only take about 20 minutes to swap out.

Alright well I'm not worried about the speedo, I have a GPS that tracks the speed so that's not really a problem.

An uncalibrated speedo will affect the way it runs, because the PCM uses the speed input to do its thing. This can affect the way the transmission shifts.

Just forget it, fellers. This Millennial here is either choosing not to, or is incapable of, listening/taking good advice. Quite an epidemic these days, I fear.

He ain't worried about the speedo, he says! He just wants to go faster...and get better gas mileage (because he "knows" a tuner will increase MPG)...with 35s...lifted...

To date, he hasn't stated what engine or gear he has. Hard to look at a feller's *** and read his mind.

But your shift points are still off. That's what will be the killer on your mpg's, whether tuned or not. No tuner can make up for that on a 97-98 truck.

I can really see why some peole come on here for about 2-3 posts then get off and never come back on haha.
What they're trying to say is that if you correct that little gear, your shift points will be adjusted to correct and will possibly get you some better gas mileage, it's not about whether or not you've gotten used to it and it functioning properly in the way that it'll tell you the correct speed.
And as far as tuners and that stuff goes, honestly, from what I've gathered so far, it depends on whether or not you're gonna be further modifying it to go even faster and that you seriously wanna go much faster. If not then you can just buy "canned" tunes which are just the tunes that come on the handheld programmers/chips that you can buy from edge, SCT or other companies.

Alright so getting my speedo back on track will give me better gas mileage because of the shift points? Alright well sounds like I need to fix that problem lol.and button why gears would you recommend for me? I'm planning on in the future moving up to 37's so what gears would be best for those tires?

I understand that 35's or 37's and mpg don't really go together, but correct me if I'm wrong but won't new gears and a tuner help with mpg a little? I'm not really sure that's why I am asking these questions hoping for answers, not people like you to make fun of me for not knowing something....

With 37's, you should be looking at 4.88's.
