Towing with 93 perf tune.

I don't have custom tunes, running a Gryphon on level 3 and 93 octane with minor adjustments. I don't drive the truck as much anymore since I have a DD, so I wanted to run 93, have just been on the lazy side of things as far as getting a custom file written.

In a few weeks I may be towing a small car 400 miles. Should I go back to the 87 tow and run a tank of 87 before pulling the car? Just want to see if burning the 93 would be a waste if the 87 tow file may aid be better towing behavior. I have been running the 93 since November, right when winter hit. The mpgs dropped so I can not verify that the 93 file/octane caused this as I believe it is the winter blend and cold air. Just want some opinions if I should go back to 87 of not.

You should never tow with a performance tune. I think Bill at PHP said up to 2500 lbs would be safe but no more. Put it on the tow tune. You can use the 93 with the 87 tune till it's gone, then switch to 87.
Won't hurt anything

because it's the canned Edge tune, I'd feel comfortable towing with it

now if the level three messes with the shift firmness then I'd for sure not use due to strain on the pump

Level 3 definitely has the shift firmness dialed up plus you don' t have the low end torque of the tow tune. That's why it comes with both tunes.

Now I thought that since I bought it originally from PHP themselves as a Gryphon it had Bill's canned tunes in it. Didn't he refine them for the Gryphon better than his off-the-shelf Edge Programmer canned tunes?

As Bluejay already mentioned, it did increase the line pressure. Ticked me off so I dialed it back down. The last thing I need is a failing pump because of a stupid program adjustment. I kind of worry about my 33s weight and the harder shifting. But it feels smoother after tuning it down.

A couple people tell me that you want a firm shifting trans as its better for the life of the trans. My response is "Apparently you don't know that at least in a Ford 4R75, all it is doing is increasing line pressure. It is nothing like the Corvette Servo mod GM guys do."

DarrenWS6 - is the programming in the 6r80 same deal as 4r75 - increased pump pressure?

My 5star perf/tow is a little firmer than stock, not by a mile though. Way quicker shift that's for sure. Just curious about safety

Thanks

Darren, you're correct, a faster firmer shift IS better for the transmission BUT not via the pump, do it mechanically - hence the factory tech seperator plate and J-mod that people do to these transmissions

as far as my suggestion for the canned tune being ok is that normally the timing is better on the higher octane tunes = better low end but as Bluejay already posted in the canned tunes it's not "sauce down low" timing as I figured it would be, so for sure listen to Bluejay as he is more experienced with the Edge / Gryphon devices than I am
