Gryphon cts programmer questions
Gryphon cts programmer questions
So I have decided that I want to purchase the Gryphon CTS programmer and but am having trouble understanding how I want my truck tuned. I have a 2004 f150 with the 5.4. I do some towing of boats ranging from 500lbs to 5000 lbs and occasionally some trailers with varying weights. How does getting custom tunes work? And how do they really differ from the canned tunes? I have read the stickys and went through a ton of the posts on here, so I feel I have an understanding for it, but something just doesn't seem to be clicking with me. Anything that may make it a little more clear will help. Thanks
Hi.
First, the differences:

Second, how: go to www.gopowerhungry.com and use the order form.
Third: The tunes are downloaded by you to the device when they are ready from PHP's server - you just need to install the utility to yer Windows pc (you get a notification) - no need to send any hardware in
Fourth: the kind of tunes you need are a personal choice - if yer not sure ask them, and/or join up on their forum and you'll get tones of advice.
Example: towing? Get a max tow in either 87 or 93 octane. Get a Perf tune also if you wish.
The tuning is Specific to your exact truck's PCM strategy code - which you need to supply - the CTS can pull that for you. It is NOT a generic tune like canned would be, hence, more refined and usually more powerful.
Good luck!

Thanks. Another question is when I purchase the programmer, do I order custom tunes right away and pay extra? If that is the case, does pay to get a programmer with out getting custom tunes right away?
If you were to buy an Edge CTS from somewhere else, I believe it's then $60 per tune plus the' convert' charge.
Hopefully a more conversant feller will chime in to add/correct ( I'm an SCT guy) - this info is also on their website IIRC...

I think the tuning is $30 per custom tune. You get the enhanced PHP canned tunes by default IF you buy the programmer from them in Gryphon form from the beginning.

I'm going to suppy a tiny "caveat": with the CS/CTS platforms, Bill at PHP no longer "tweaks" the canned tunes, the way he did on the monochrome Gryphon. The reason may be hard to understand, but I'll try.
The CS/CTS boxes use Edge's Fusion to update their software/firmware and to download custom tunes that Bill writes. Unfortunately, anytime you plug the programmer into Fusion to update its firmware, Edge also overwrites any tuning in the device with their own canned tunes. This means, once you load a custom tune, you should never plug back into Fusion again unless you want to lose the custom tunes.
It also complicates the custom tune upload. Bill has to inform you the tunes are ready and you need to immediately plug the programmer into Fusion to update its firmware to the latest version. Then, Bill has to put your tunes on the Fusion server and you need to immediately plug into Fusion ONCE to download and install them.
Any "tweaked" canned tunes that PHP would put on the device would not survive the initial connection to Fusion you have to do to "register" your programmer when you receive it.
Bill has attempted to convince Edge that it would be good to modify the way Fusion works, but they are not interested, probably since Fusion is used for all their car/truck applications, not just Ford.
