Digusted with PHP

So I'm thoroughly disgusted with the customer support PHP has, or utter lack thereof. My truck suffers from the, apparently too common Stutter/Waffle/Shaking tuning glitch that seems to accompany their custom tunes. I've tried several times to get this issue resolved to no avail, or even acknowledgment from them that they are looking into it.

Does anyone on this forum know what is causing this terrible glitch?

If not then its time to suck up the $400 loss on a faulty product and go shopping elsewhere because I'm sick of having to drive around with a truck that sounds and drives like a POS waiting for it to sort itself out or having to pull over and shut the vehicle off and turn it back on. Has anyone had any of these issues with say 5 Star tuning, Troyer or VMP?

I'm definitely interested in 5 star because from what I hear:

A) He answers phones
B) Doesn't take him forever to get the tune to you
C) Replies to any correspondence in a reasonable period of time

Thanks

In order to eliminate the driveability issues you are currently experiencing, could you not just return it to stock and drive without issue? Seems as though that would be the smartest option at this point. Unfortunately I have never utilized any other programmer on these trucks other than the Gryphon. I have read of good reviews and praises for the Troyer tunes, but again no personal experience with them.

I bought an SCT X3 from VMP with custom tunes. first ones sent were faulty because he claimed i never sent him the hex/computer code which i did. i emailed him about it and sent my computer code again to him. then after about 6 emails from me and about a week, i finally got a response from justin saying he was working on it and i got tunes a few hours later thru my email. i loaded them and have only used 1 tune of the 3 but its great. I have heard many great things about troyer except the long waiting list for tunes. VMP i liked but had a scary experience at first but it turned out fine. i would say order some tunes by phone from VMP and ask how long it will take and everything before you order and make sure you give your computer code. that way you will know about how long the wait is. I never knew.. but i think a tune from VMP runs around $60 but im not sure. hope this helps

If you have an Edge/Gryphon, you don't have a choice - you will have to buy a new device to use a different custom tuning service.

Have you posted your issues over on the PHP forums? Squeaky wheel gets the grease faster over there.

Ya its sounding like VMP is my best option. I know I have to buy a new programmer but the $400 dollars its better than having an embarassing truck. Nothing like being on a date when your vehicle starts shaking and acting retarded.

Posted issue on PHP support forum back in Sept 2011 and have regularily brought up the problem since then only to have moderates say they will leave notes with Bill. Haven't recieved a single call, email, PM, text or post from them. How sad is that? Also calling them is a bloody nightmare as many of you know.

I agree their customer service is crap. I have been trying to get ahold of them to get a custom tune from my gryphon after my long tube install and no answer. And now I find out it will take 4-6 weeks to even get a tune. This company is a joke and ran like a kindergarten class. I called another company today and will have an SCT Livewire with the custom tune I need in a couple days. That is how a company should be run.

BTW Gryphon is for sale lol.

VMP Tuning might take a couple of weeks but they tell you that right on their website. It's worth it because he's one of the best tuners out there.

Mike Butler at 5Startuning.com also has a stellar reputation for quality tunes and customer service.

He carries the full line of SCT products.

Have you actually contacted Bill to sort this out? Yes the mods try their best to contact Bill but he can't catch everything. Try the live chat feature on their website, that's usually the best way to get a hold of them. Keep in mind Bill's wife has been having several medical issues lately so they're in and out of the phones and hours have been changing.
I'm sure once Bill actually knows about the problem he can take the steps to correct anything wrong in your tune.

Which tuner do you have? I have a PHP / Edge CTS. When I had issues reaching Bill at PHP, I just called Edge and they fixed the various issues I had with their canned tunes. Personally, I don't think I can easily distinguish between the Edge Level 3 tune and Bill's Custom 93 tune - both shift great (now), both can spin the tires from a start (not due to more power necessarily, but by removing the torque management on tip-in), and both give noticeably more torque in the midrange. I can tow with my custom tune from PHP and cannot with my CTS level 3 tune though (my custom tune has a little less timing and runs a little richer under load). Bill did give me the option to adjust my overall timing and WOT timing through my tuner's custom interface, which is very nice. I don't think he has released this feature broadly, but if you have had pinging issues like I have had, maybe he will add it for you.

One more thing, my custom tune has torque management enabled on shift. I suspect that the Edge level 3 tune has it disabled altogether. I wanted it enabled, especially for towing.

Altatruck, what is your username on PHP? I searched and couldn't find that name anywhere.

Shadowrider, enough bellyaching. You said having the possibility of the tunes within even 3 weeks was was unacceptable. Ask around, some people have waited much longer than that and were still happy with their results. So they can't have your tunes to you in a few days. Well, it shouldn't be much of a surprise. They have customers across the US and internationally so obviously they are going to be more busy than your local mustang shop. If you could have convinced them why you needed to be next, I'm sure they would have. But your attitude didn't help your situation. One thing I find particularly irritating are people who are little trolls on one forum then come onto another crying about how they were mistreated. If anyone can be considered childish, it is you.

I would recommend 5-Star, Mike is top shelf in my book. I will be placing an order with him for my new truck as soon as I can find my cable to update the device. When I have called in the past I have gotten someone every time.
