2009 5.4L tuner choices?

Hey!

I could use a bit of help figuring out what tuners are available for my truck. Also, specifically, the differences between them.

I'm not inexperienced, and I've done stand alone engine management systems before.

I've been reading the forums and searching. However, there really is only nebulous data and information on the various tuners.

1) So, if possible please list the tuners.
2) Please list what they do and don't do (by brand/type)

Thanks so much!

Chris

I used an Edge. Came in a nice pod that looked stock. Made a nice difference in power and maybe .5 mpg improvement. Used it for 50K miles w/o issue. Liked the info it showed me. Could also do all basics, get rid of limiter, recalc speedo, change timing, shift points, etc.

1) SCT, SCT Livewire,
2) Edge/gryphon, Gryphon CS, and Gryphon CTS
3) Superchips, Coretex, Flashpaq.

I got to tell you, this is nothing but confusing, I can't tell the difference between offerings from the same company, not to mention between brands.

From the forums, some people have CEL's, some don't, It's impossible to tell which one is good, if any. Some sites have dyno results, some don't. Some forum information does not apply to my model year. Some products are "one size fits all". How can that possibly work?

Suggestions please!!

Thanks!!!!!

The 2 brands of programmers most recommended here for any year are SCT and Edge. Either way, custom tunes are recommended over canned tunes. There are several companies that custom tune with SCT, the most recommended here are Troyer, VMP, and 5 Star. The *ONLY* company that custom tunes Edge is PHP. A "Gryphon" is simply an Edge modified by PHP.

The sticking point on the 09+ has been the TCM for the 6 speed. Prior to this, transmission programming was handled by the ECM. I do not know how well SCT and Edge have handled this so far.

If you decide on a SCT, I'd probably buy it from VMP or 5 Star, because Troyer's lead time on custom tunes is measured in months. If you decide on an Edge, I'd buy it from PHP, because if you do, custom tunes are half price. Either way, the "canned" tunes they come with may or may not be satisfactory.

Another possibility is Diablo, they do have a very helpful presence on this forum - but they do not do true custom tunes per se.

The SCT Livewire will not work on the 09-10. The only option is the XCAL3.

There seems to be a bit of confusion here...anything that can be done with SCT can be done with Diablosport.
Our CMR software does the same thing as their Advantage software, if you have 1 person tuning cars, and he uses CMR on one and SCT on another, the results will be the same, period

To clarify, we offer full custom tuning support. Any shop can buy our CMR software, and tune your truck any way you'd like it. This is in addition to our canned tunes, which I feel are often every bit as good as some of the 'custom tunes' that are created around here by filling out a form, or at least with no datalogging

We not only offer this custom tuning option for Ford, but for GM and Chrysler applications. Any HEMI you have even seen make more power than stock, was more than likely tuned with CMR.

From mildly modified F150s to 8 second 2011 Mustangs, we can do it all.

Thanks

Are most canned tunes based on a stock truck? I have an 09 5.4L and my main reason for wanting a tuner is to improve the transmission and get rid of that feeling that there is no power right on the pedal.

If I get a tuner with custom tunes I am going to do one for Regular, Premium, and E85. Could I do one tune with all stock fuel settings and just improved tranmission response so I could run any fuel I want with out being concerned with the tune?

No - tunes are octane dependent.

If you want the TCM re-programmed and you want an Gryphon CS/CTS, you need to wait until the Edge software is stable.

im new and be researching this thread.... now im confused. i want a programmer, but already have a cold air intake, and cat back exhaust. will the canned tunes on a programmer support my aftermarket products? or do i need a custom tune?

and also is a "custom" tune just a regular programmer that someone customized??

i have a 2003 f150 5.4l... if anyone could anwser my questions it would be much appreciated and clear up my issues. does anyone else have a 2003 5.4l with a custom tune, if so what would you recomend for my aftermarket products? the only other thing i want done to my truck is a custom tune. thanks in advance.
