Possible to have a truck programmed and not know it?

I was wondering if it was possible to have a truck and not know it was programmed? A buddy of mine bought a used 2008 F150 from a dealer. I also have a 2007 F150 and his truck drives a lot better. More power and easier shifting. Is it possible the previous owner had a programmer for it and didn't leave it with the truck, but left the truck programmed?

Yes it is possible. My brother in law's 05 F150 was repo'd with his custom tunes still in it.

Is there a way of finding out? I thought a tuner was good for only one truck? Can you use a tuner for more than one truck? If you have a programmer and a buddy wants the same tune, can you use it for his truck also?

Nope. Typically, you download the tune into your PCM, and the tuner uploads your factory tunes into the programmer. Can't have the same custom tunes in two places at once. How would they make any money that way?

Besides, a custom tune is good for that HEX code only.

So is there any reason someone would have a programmed truck but not leave the programmer with the truck?

Sure, it can happen for many reasons.

People do stuff all the time for no rhym or reason or simply because they don't know better.

Possible he left the truck tuned thinking it'ld sell easier and kept the tuner to sell not knowing it was "vin locked".

Maybe he lost the tuner? Maybe the GF ate it?

Maybe a husband or son is killed and wife or parent sells truck and never knew of "tuner".

Maybe it's a "repoed unit"?

You'd either have to take it to a dealer so that they can read the pcm or try to hook up a programmer and tune the vehicle and at that time an error would occur....

In general custom tunes are hex code/ box code based........they only can be used on used on that vehicle and are only written for that code....

Canned tunes can be used on a multiple of hex codes.......

Rule of thumb is one programmer=one vehicle......

Try going over 100 mph and see if it cuts out. If it doesn't, chances are it has a tune in it. If it does cut out it can still possibly be tuned. My truck is running a "canned" tune but I left the speed limiter alone since I have no business going over 100 with mud terrains.

Also

You need to find out what the gear ratios are in each truck. Chances are your buddy's truck is geared with a 3.73.

Or your truck is just a turd.

Male, that's funny. I actually was jealous when he brought it over. I was trying to find out what made his different. I want what his has. It was smoother riding, more power, and handled better around corners. I hate him.

Yeah, check the axle codes on the drivers doors to see if they have the same stock gear set.... that isn't to say that the previous owner of his truck didn't change them though.

If I traded my truck in to a dealer and someone bought it they would be confused because the axle code is 19 (3.55 open) and I have 4.56 gears in it.

Are you sure you both trucks have the same engines? Maybe you have a 4.6 and he has a 5.4? Are they the same height? The previous owner of his truck could have also put in a shift kit or valve body. There are quite a few possibilities.

Randy I don't know what a shift kit or valve body is. What do they do and what do they look like?

A valve body is an upgrade for the transmission that makes for smoother more firm shifts.
http://www.troyerperformance.com/cgi...P%20-%204R70VB
Troyer Performance Valve Body for all F-150's with 4R70W, 4R70-E & 4R75-E 4-speed automatic transmissions!

This valve body fits virtually all 4R70-series automatic transmissions in Ford F-series gas-engine trucks, including the 1997-2003 F-150 with 4.6 V8, the 1999 - 2003 F-150 with 5.4 2V V8, and even the new 2004 & up new body style F-150's with the 5.4 3V V8 engines, too!

Simple bolt-on installation, replaces your factory stock valve body. Delivers much quicker, tighter & crisper shifts - this valve body is a complete unit with enlarged passages, all orifices already sized, springs, etc. have been optimized - it's ready to go.

If you are using a performance chip or programmer, you may (or may not) want to back down the light-throttle shift firmness levels (if you are using our Troyer Performance custom tuning, we can easily take care of this for you, just give us a call at (540) 965-7126), depending on your individual preference for shift firmness.

This valve body will give a relatively smooth part-throttle shift, as well as giving many vehicles (depending on weight & power) tire-screeching WOT (wide-open throttle) 1-2 upshifts, along with quicker downshifts.

Now you can finally get the kind of rapid filling of your transmission's clutch packs and quicker fluid volume flow to the torque converter that will protect that transmission as you increase power, or even at stock power levels for towing, etc.

This is something that NOBODY else offers, as this is the very FIRST valve body on the market that works on the new 4R75-E automatic transmissions!!

No longer do you have to tolerate just a separator plate that whose performance varies because you are not changing the entire valve body & spring package - now you can get all matching hardware so it works correctly on each vehicle!
This is what one looks similar to:
