I reciently replaced my stock gas cap with an after market one that has a key.due to the hih price of gas lol. The check engine light and " CHECK FUEL CAP" message scrolls on my screen. Any insight would be appreciated.

It's not sealing properly, and this is an emissions concern. If you have to have your truck emissions inspected, it will fail. If that is not required where you live, you can ignore it. (But of course you ARE allowing hydrocarbons to escape into the atmosphere.)

Really, I'd try to find a locking cap that does not throw this code. I don't know honestly if it's important in fact, but the truck was designed as a "system", and if any component in that system is not working properly, there MAY be bad side effects on the rest of the "system".

And, I'd hate to be seeing this message anytime I was driving my truck.

The cap is either defective or the wrong one for your truck. Take it back and exchange it.

I've had a locking cap on my 03 for years with out any issues.

That happened to me just this April as well.

I tried the cap several times. Noticed a whiff of gas smell too. Never did get the cap on tight enough to make warning go away ...

... but the warning did go away later that day
after I removed and repaired and reinstalled the small high pressure fuel line and larger vapor return lines from above the fuel tank where them DAMN SQUIRRELS HAD LUNCH!

... $286 at Ford and no warranty against teeth so .... I used splices to repair mine and used some copper as well. If it happens again, I have a coil of copper and the needed adapter fittings to replace from tank outlet to filter where they no longer have a fuel tank to sit on top of while MUNCHING DOWN ON PLASTIC!

Marshall Robert - I moved your posts and replies to a new thread in the 97-03 Forum: https://www.f150online.com/forums/19...l-economy.html

And, to those of you whose posts I moved by mistake, hope I've got it right now. :o (Thanks, glc!)
