Looking Into a Gryphon, But I Have Questions...
Alright, so I've had my 06 SCREW since 07 and the only things I've done to it is leveling kits, exhaust (MBRP SI/DO), and tires (305/55/20 Trail Grapplers). Seeing that I am at that point where I don't want to add anything else to my 4wheeler anymore (it's a money pit), I'm now looking at adding stuff to my truck.
I was searching around last night and came up with a combination of things that I thought would be good to do. These include: 1) DWV intake mod 2) Amsoil EaA200 air filter 3) Gryphon
I have a couple of questions regarding this setup...
1) I'm hoping to acheive better MPG in the 1-2 range (currently getting anywhere between 12-14). Would this setup increase my MPG any? If not, would I, at the very least, be able to maintain my current MPG? MPG is a major factor for me. Increased MPG would be great, maintaining my current MPG would be ok with me, but losing MPG would make me consider not doing any of this. Just wanting to hear what others have experienced.
2) I saw on the PHP website that the Gryphon comes with 3 tunes (transmission only, 87 octane tow, and 93 octane performance). Seeing that I run 87 in my truck 99.9% of the time, I'm thinking of adding the custom 87 octane performance tune as well. Can all 4 be loaded into the Gryphon, or does it only hold 3 tunes? And what exactly is the "transmission only" tune?
3) Does the Gryphon allow you to switch back and forth between tunes, or do you have to hook it up to a computer everytime you want to switch? Remember, I'm a noob here...
I really appreciate the help here. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

If you have not adjusted for larger tires then that mpg is wrong. The larger tires throws not only the spedo off but the odometer as well... This can be fixed with any good programer. If you have not adjusted for that and calculated the mpg after the tires were added, chances are you are actually getting a lil bit worse, as your odometer doesn't read as many miles as you actually went.
You may pick up a mile or 2 better with the mods but its not guaranteed. Tire size and how light your foot is are the only two sure ways to gain mpg in these trucks. However you will see better performance with the mods and the gryphon will help keep the truck from searching for a gear while on the highway with the larger tires.... another good performance adder is to replace the factory Ypipe on the exhaust as it doesn't flow as well as it could.
The gryphon can only hold 3 tunes at a time, so in your case you would have
lvl 1 transmission only
lvl 2 87 tow (or 87 custom tow if needed)
lvl 3 custom 87 performance.
the transmission only tune does not adjust the fuel curve, rev limiter, timing or anything else on the motor, all it does is change the shift points for the transmission.
The three tunes that you choose are stored on the gryphon so you can switch without removing the unit from the truck, however it is not able to switch on the fly, i.e. you have to park and turn the truck off to change tunes.
If you can wait for the gryphon from php (as they are usually very busy) it is well worth it. It is a great product from a great company, and I as well as many others on here are extremely satisfied with it.

I kept the canned tow tune as I seldom tow and it was adequate. I bought an 87 perf and a 93 Perf tune. I run the 87 Perf exclusively as it is extremely good.

Thomabro nailed it.
The monochrome gryphon can only hold 3 tunes. BUT the CS and CTS is able to hold around 20.
If I were you, I would order a performance tune and a tow tune right off the bat. Sometimes you'll get better mileage with one as compared to the other.
If you want to get a better idea of your true mileage. Divide your new tire size by your old tire size (as in the circumference of the tire) and multiply that by the miles you had driven. Then do your normal calculation. That adjustment will bring your final value closer. I wont say it is perfect because you haven't accounted for tire squish but it will give you a decent ballpark.
Right now I think once you submit your HEX code it is only a few weeks. Since Cody got rolling on tuning the wait times have been cut down quite a bit. Right now when I see someone who hasn't gotten their tunes it is because something didn't go through correctly.

and if no one answered it the gryphon makes the trans shift a little harder than factory, so the first tune, transmission only, will leave the stock fuel and spark maps alone, but make it shift more firm. then level 2, the 87 tow tune, will give you a little more power.
Alot of great info here. But you say I can go with an "87 custom tow".....is that not the same as the canned "87 octane tow." If not, then I'll probably have to pay for two custom tunes instead of one (87 custom tow and 87 custom performance). I don't really care to have the 93 performance tune seeing that I don't even use 93 octane fuel.
And yeah, you're right....I haven't accounted for larger tires and what not. Main reason is because when I have my cruise control dead set, say on 55mph or whatever on my truck speedometer, my GPS mph bounces between 55 and 56.......so I didn't think my larger tires were making that much of a difference with neither the speed or odo calibrations.

I have the custom 87 non-tow and custom 87 tow tunes, like you are thinking of getting. My truck spends about half its life towing. I've never put high octane gas in it and don't intend to. I think your tune choices are correct. The custom tunes ARE different than the canned tunes (I call them "more refined").
