Blown truck - finally going to see Troyer
#17
I haven't had the chance to talk to Troyer yet, but we are definitely due for a conversation. As it stands now, I'm very disappointed that my truck even left his shop with the tuning the way it is. Drivability is laughable. Before I throw him under the bus, I realize further tuning tweaks might have been required - in this instance, definitely required. The truck ran a helluva lot better before he got it than it does now. Now I just need him to return my phone calls / e-mails, and hopefully there's just some sort of oversight that occurred. Hopefully. Stay tuned...

He dyno tuned my magnacharger setup and it was a 100% improvement over what the magnuson tuner sent with the supercharger. What is wrong with the drivability has you upset?
Oh the email thing, I had sent them several emails about their VB I installed and shifting is really bad, never got a response, keep calling. When you do call again, just ask for Anita, seems when I made my third call into Troyer it rolled over to her and I spoke with her and I got a callback the next day from the tech who was looking at my problem. I had been waiting almost two weeks for a callback before that.

The throttle is way too sensitive. Even being very sensitive with the throttle (as a helicopter pilot, I inherently maintain constant vigilance with my control touch), if anyone else were to get into my truck (aka, wife, valet, etc.) it would be launched through the garage door.
Additionally, at constant highway speeds straight and level, the truck wants to go into boost arbitrarily, or with the slightest gust of wind, even with the engagement / disengagement of the AC compressor. Possibly related to the touchy throttle (boost) even from a stop?
The 3-4 shift (into OD) seems to happen prematurely, and then the truck is bogging, while applying ~10# of boost (indicated). Also, the truck is currently yielding 11 to 13 MPG. That's actually worse than before Troyer tuned the truck.
I will be towing a 7,000# trailer in the next week or so, and as the truck is tuned now, I would not be able to do that.
I did talk to Anita today, and she just said she would pass the message on to Mike.

Yea that's the Troyer tune. I both a Troyer and VMP and the Troyer has the boost/power surge you talk about. I get about 13 mpg with a 10psi Whipple and 47lb injectors. The VMP tune gets the same mpg but the throttle feels just like my whipple stock tune. Honestly 95% of the time I use the Troyer tune because it feels stronger. Wot and the truck is perfect.

I got 3 tunes from Troyer: 91 Tow / Bad Gas, 93 Street (daily driving), and 93 Max Performance. I've tried the both 93 tunes, and they both reflect the same poor shifting / boost characteristics. When towing, I would definitely use the 91 Tow tune, but it won't be for long distances, just 20 to 50 miles locally.
I know I'm not being too picky - when other people have been in my truck since the Troyer tunes, the common reaction is "what the hell is wrong with you truck?..."
Great question.

Actually, I don't think you're being too picky at all. I think he should make the necessary adjustments that put a smile on your face. Try the tow tune and see if that isn't as responsive as the others. That way you can tell him whether the bypass and other adjustments in the bad gas/tow tune are what you want in your performance tune. Or whether you want less sensitivity than that.

He always does. It has been a year and a few weeks since Mike tuned my truck. It was 1000 times better than the tunes from other shops but not perfect. Since then he has revised the tunes a few times to adjust it to my every whim. His desire is for you to be 100% pleased. I found this out for sure once he started calibrating my tune. It got down to the point that I was telling him where I wanted it shift at a certain speed and throttle position. Spent countless hours on the phone going over stuff like, "Mike I want it to hold 1st gear till this speed, 2nd till this speed, and 3rd till this speed at 26-34% throttle. Than at 35-47% I want etc etc etc." Then came stuff like throttle response, torque management and shift pressures at various speeds and throttle positions, and so on. Like I said hours upon hours. Mike will bend over backwards to make sure your happy. Some people are perfectly happy when there car leaves the shop and others find something right away, while some will find little things over time. But enough about that.
Keep a note pad in the truck. When you hear or feel something you don't like write it down. Include details like what you were doing when it happened, speed, rpm, gear and so on. Make a list and then call him or email him with it. This way he can make changes all at once and work out the snags. Oh and be patient. Mike will always get back with you, just not always as fast as you would like. Congrats on getting boosted and tuned!
