Throws codes with Edge, none without

I have an older edge evolution with out the display and had it on for years. It started throwing p1000, p171, p174. I checked all of the vacuum hoses and elbow on the rear of the intake. Took off edge and codes stayed away for 1400 miles so all good.

Put edge back on in trans only mode and codes came back in 46 miles. Why would I get codes with edge and none without? Any ideas?

thanks for sharing, but your lack of basic information makes it impossible for us to help you since we can't see thru the internet and see for ourselves what truck, engine, and mods you have, let alone the last time you did maintenance and what parts were used

the p1000 code just means that the tune has been modified or the battery has been disconnected since the last full drive cycle. It goes away after about 50 miles of start and go, multple speed driving.

Have you tried cleaning or replacing the MAF?

Pretty sure those codes are lean bank 1 and 2 but you have to post what year model and make to start.
Ignore the p1000 code it'll pop up after you program it as posted above but it goes away after a bit of distance driving with different speeds.

aftermarket air filter kit?
bad o2 sensors?
leaky intake manifold?
could be a lot of things but it's easier for people to narrow it down with more info

Sorry, about the lack of info. It is a 99 4.6 4x4 with a k&n drop in filter and a cat back exhaust. I changed plugs two months back. I am using motorcraft plugs, I have cleaned the maf, and inspected the vacuum lines after reading that is where the lean condition usually comes from.

ensure the "edge" is for your truck

It is for my model. I have had it on previously with no problems for 2 years. Then it started throwing these codes. I checked all of the vacuum hoses for splits and breaks.I kept it on the 87 tow tune.

It is an edge evolution for 97-03 Ford Triton engines. The model # is EEF2000. I know it is the right one for my truck because I used it with no issues previously.

Codes P0171 and P0174 ARE lean codes for banks 1 and 2. So, let's go on the assumption that there is some condition causing those codes.

But, your statement that you, "Took the Edge off" is not really warming my heart. Unless you change the tune, the Edge is just a monitor, so, without the Edge, you're not going to be able to "see" the codes. But, I'm going to guess that maybe you meant to say you returned the tune to stock.

So, what happens when you return the tune to stock? First, it SETS the P1000 code, and the PCM "relearns" your driving style and it can adjust for things like dirty MAFs and so on. Maybe, it is just able to overcome the "slight" problem you have in your truck.

You set the tune to Level 1 - Transmission only, and the codes came back? You should not see the P1000 code here, because that one is suppressed. But, you have NOT changed anything in the engine's tune except to prevent it from reacting fast enough to the degraded components. So, it now can't compensate for the problem in your engine (whatever that is).

Sorry, I'm left with a problem in the MAF, O2 sensors, or leaks, regardless of how well you think you've checked and verified that these systems are all right. I don't have any specs for the MAF or O2 sensors in your model year truck, but they should be operating within some fairly narrow voltage limits - have you checked that? And, leaks can be VERY hard to track down.

A "tune" is NOT going to "drift". It is simply a digital program that resets your stock program for improved performance. The things that drift are the mechanical or electrical components in your powertrain. They do this due to wear and tear and aging. The stock program compensates for these gradual changes over time, but the system cannot compensate properly when it's tuned, because the "tune" expects the system to be in an "optimal" condition.
