Question about Superships Flashpaq

Hello,
Could someone please help me. I am new to all this tuner stuff. I have been reading and researching on this website but I am still unclear.

If I were to purchase this http://www.autoanything.com/performa...0A2606091.aspx for my truck would it work with my setup?

2005 F150 XLT 4x4, 5.4 3V Triton, Flowmaster Super 44 w/ side exit, Spectre CAI

I hear about canned tunes and custom tunes. Would I need to get a custom tune for the truck or would a canned one work?

Thanks for any help in advance.

Hello & Welcome sir!

No.

It will work, but it cannot accomodate the Sphincter CAI ( which is junk, BTW). As for yer other mods, none require corrections.

This is a canned tuner, and while SC can supply calibrations ( the MAF TF's actually) for a couple well-known CAI's, the Sphincter is not one of them

Do the Gotts mod instead. Then you can use the tuner as-is.

Or - ask DiabloMike if they have a curve yet for the Sphincter if you are dead set on getting that POS dryer-vent intake

Or - get an SCT flash programmer ( X3) with custom tuning - about the same dinero, and far superior to canned. And yes, even that CAI can be integrated ( may need to do some 'logging, though).

Good luck ....

So basically if I get the Spectre it won't work, it is crap and nobody can tune the truck to use it? That sucks! Guess I will just dump money into my bike and leave the truck alone!

No Brian, that is NOT what I said.

Talk to DiabloMike, and/or call one or all 3 of the SCT dealers on here and find out if they have had a chance to flowbench or map that SPECIFIC intake on a 5.4L 3V.

If they have, then they have a MAF TF table to plug in; if not you need to datalog the truck to acquire one. ANY of those guys can easily tune for this , or any other intake you could imagine.

Like I said - for the minimal gains you are better off doing the Gotts mod - it's safe, no corrections needed. and yer IAT's will be lower for it. The gains are gonna be in the tuning, NOT the intake.

OK?

Gotcha, seems like too much of a hassle to do all that. I wasn't being negative about it. I appreciate the responses. Like I said, this tuning stuff is new to me.

The single best mod you can do is a good programmer with custom tunes.

Roger that, Brian. We cool, sir.

No negativity here - it may help to talk to one of those folks - you an pick up a lot of great info/insight in just a few minutes of conversation with these fellers

The FlashPaq and Cortex are good canned tuners. Just need to be careful what you mod, and be aware that custom is not that much more in cost. And IMHO, well worth it.

Heve a look at the stickies at the top of this forurn as well if you haven't already. Good stuff.

Godd luck bud.

^^ Thanks for the find. I read to be weary of used ones, they only are good for one tune per vehicle?

I have been used to custom tuned vehicles for the past 10 years which have included an '01 Lightning, '03 Cobra, and I just got rid of a Roush powered '04 F-150 Supercrew. All of these vehicles were custom tuned and made incredible horsepower.
HOWEVER, I am presently using a Superchips 1865 Flashpac on my '06 FX4 and can actually say that until I get the chance to get down to Troyers to get custom tunes and a new XCal3, I am satisfied with the way this truck is performing.
I have true dualed the Lightning style exhaust, and am running 315/70/17's on a 17 x 9 wheel and the truck is getting a solid 18.2 mpg on the highway.
The 1865 Flashpac falls far short of custom tuning, however if you just need a little extra grunt and a way to adjust tire and gear size, its not a bad tool.

Soooooooo, would this replacement intake tube require any tune then since it hooks into the factory airbox and does not mess with the MAF location?

Hello Brian.

Please refer to this excerpt from Justin @ VMP Tuning:

"We can tune for different cold air intakes on 05+ Mustangs and 04+ F150s. Any aftermarket intake that flows well and puts the slot-style MAF sensor into a larger less restrictive housing is going to REQUIRE a tune for the vehicle to run properly. Intakes that do not require a tune are often just as restrictive as stock and do not result in large power gains."

The MIT provide no better gains than the Gotts mod, but due to the fact that it DOES completely alter the design of the bulk of intake tract (elimination of the Helmholtz chambers and a different, larger shape), there have been instances where MAF TF affects were seen, requiring correction. Especially on the very sensitive '04's and '05's.

Given it's cost versus the Gotts mod - a delta of over $100 - it would only be worth it if you really, really wanted/needed to clean up the appearance of the engine bay.

For performance? Not worth it. Plus, without measurements, you would never know if it was detrimental on yer specific truck with yer specific PCM calibration - there were many different ones in '05, some wore than others.

The only way you will even begin to answer that is to directly consult with a custom tuner dealer like VMP, TP or PHP. No one on here can advise you properly other than to point you in that direction.
