running lean

i have a 2000 5.4(93k), edge evolution, and have done the "gotts mod". when i set my edge to level 2 and the motor goes down in rpms(1100-1500) it makes a knocking or rattling sound like spark knock or octane knock. on level 1 its fine but just even less fun to drive so is it the gotts mod causing this or is there another solution?

It should not be the Gott's mod. I would clean the MAF, the IAC and the throttle body.

the only thing i customized was the tire size. also when i did change other thing like rpm limiter the truck would blow black smoke like a diesel and run like crap. tomorrow i'l take bluejays advice and clean the MAF, the IAC and the throttle body.

anyone else with any suggestions?

Use high octane fuel when you use Level 2.

Level 2 IS 87 octane. Black smoke sounds like a very rich running engine to me.

You didn't say it, but I've seen somewhat similar symptoms when people tried to adjust the WOT fuel setting. If you possibly did that, try reentering your tune but this time, leave the WOT fuel alone.

FYI
Level 1 is Tranny Only.
Only the transmission's parameters are changed.

Peace!

in the past i might have changed the WOT, but i have left all that alone and ONLY changed the tire size and still get that rattle sound. i could care less about the rest, just want to run level 2 on 87oct.

and yes 88racing i knew that about level 1.

also thanks for the replies

It may be an 87 octane tune, but if it's pinging, you need to use higher octane or remove the tune until you find out what's going on.
