SCT tuner/Gotts question

Quick tuning question for you folks here. I did the Gotts mod to my truck (5.4) and I have a SCT canned tune in it. I gather from researching that the mod may cause a lean condition. I have been using the "stock airbox" setting because the only other choice is JLT CAI. That option throws a code for too rich within 20 miles of driving. I know I need to buy some custom tunes but I am not ready for that, as I haven't done any exhaust work yet.

I guess for now my question is this...any other tweaks I can do? If I turn off rear O2's will the code stay clear? Any timing settings help? I think slightly rich would be safer than lean, but the CEL needs to go.

with the gotts mod you wont through any CEL's. i have the same as you. no worries. i changed it to jlt cai and after i floored it i threw a cel immediately. technically you could turn off the rear o2's and run the jlt setting. i wouldnt, as your doing nothing good. it runs just fine with the gotts and stock box setting...

its if you have an aftermarket cai that leans it out.

Run the stock air box until you get a custom tune or damage your truck those are your options.

SilverScrew - I would simply leave your PCM tuned to the stock airbox setting. Bill Cohron, at PHP, has said (more than once) that the "Gotts" style mod to the intake will not cause the engine to run lean. Yes, it should allow more air in at WOT, but by the time it reaches the MAF sensor, the additional airflow should not be causing any erroneous readings. You do not change the MAF sensor environment, which is what causes the "lean problems" with commercial CAIs.

The fact that loading the JLT CAI tune caused your truck to throw a "rich" code seems to validate this opinion. The CAI tune is designed to be quite a bit richer to compensate for the well-known tendency of commercial CAIs to run lean, especially in 04-05 trucks. But, your truck was NOT running lean, so that tune made it run too rich.

The rear O2 sensors have nothing to do with this. They only check CAT function. They do not alter engine performance in any way.

Thanks for the replies folks. I have left the airbox setting to stock. I didn't think it was too lean as it is, just wanted some reassurance I guess.
