Aeren't custom tunes awesome!? After about 500 miles of "adaptive break-in" with my Troyer 87 tune, my truck was getting 19.2 mpg average at 70mph on the highway. (before I lifted it, but still excellent for a 5.4 4x4 supercab). 30k miles and counting on the custom tunes without a single issue or regret.

Make sure you data-log just to makes sure A/F ratio is perfect (don't know if you have a aftermarket intake or not). Mine was dead on, but always good to double check.

Glad you joined the club, John.

The only reason Bill extends the displayed range from 30+ to 40+ is so you can get a better idea of what you get while on the highway (coasting). It has nothing to do with an increase in MPG. It is strange that you would get less MPG with the Gryphon....maybe it has something to do with your particular mods and how you requested Bill tweak your tunes. If you're unhappy just hit him up on the PHP Forums. I'm sure he'll be glad to help.

Yeah its amazing how lean these trucks came from the factory, such low and faint idling from poor fuel delivery. Just because they restrict fuel in the stock tune doesnt mean great gas mileage comes out of it. Everyone just about has noticed a mileage increase even on big tires. Custom tune exhaust sound is much better, more healthy. Even better when true dualed with two cats

Though it may not be intended to show an increase in MPG, it should. On the Edge, if you have the truck at a stop, it says 0mpg. If you have it coasting, it says 30mpg. If you have it at both extremes for 1 minute each, your average is 15mpg. On the Gryphon, if you have the truck at a stop, it says 0mpg. If you have it coasting, it says 40mpg. If you have it at both extremes for 1 minute each, your average is now20mpg. That's a 5mpg increase.

I know that is an extreme example because you aren't only coasting or at a stop, but the increase in range, should automatically increase the average mpg display on the Gryphon. Which I have no problem with, but mine has actually decreased since I switched from the Edge.

I didn't request anything special. Just a performance tune, which I was told should increase power and maybe mpg. I haven't noticed either. Both seem to be lacking. My only mods that should affect anything would be the AEM intake. I installed the CAI before the Gryphon. I ran it with the Edge for 2.5 months, then upgraded the Gryphon to take full advantage of it.

To the OP, sorry for this. Wasn't trying to hijack your thread. It just got frustrated. I seem to be the only one with issues, and haven't heard back from PHP.

Don't worry man... talk about it here bud... doesn't bother me.

just got in from a night out with my girl... on the highway for 40 miles or so each way and then a bunch of around town... on winterblend fuel: 255 miles on the first half of the tank and I can prolly squeeze 260 if not more. I have gained at least 2 mpg with just this tune. My previous best record is 17.4 which was mostly around town. Come summer... Im gonna be knocking on the door of 20-21 for an average it seems.

lol, this thread made my day, the parts where you guys were poking fun at each other...

on another note, truckguy, that would be cool if you did see 20-21. i really want to see what that tune does. cant wait to be able to get a SCT for mine.
does anybody notice a difference between the 87 performance and the 93 performance tunes? seems everyone says they are almost the same...

Congrats on the tunes John! I love mine the truck is more fun to drive. The performance is so much better. However I am baffled at how you and some others are getting 17 now much less 20 mpg. The tunes did little for me as far as mpg increase. I get 11-12 in town and 14 at best on the hwy. Maybe my level, large wheels/tires, bed cover and stuff that I tote around in the back all the time are hurting me?

Thanks Scott!

It is very interesting but I have come to a simple conclusion with this truck: it seems it just responds so well to the mods I do. I don't know what else to think. I seriously gained 1.5 mpgs with my magnaflow si/do exhuast. Like how the heck does that even happen? It is baffleing to me. When I got the truck it was get 13 last Feb. A few weeks later after I had the filters changed I was at almost 16. May 9th I got my exhuast done... high 16s to mid 17s. And it stayed there. Then I winter came the winter blend knocked me down to about 15. The gryphon in December got me close to 15.5-16 and then after I had the battery died on me one night at campus, it reset the computer and the truck drove 100 times better. Something was messing with the tuner and not letting it work as smoothly as it should have. Then custom tune... truck drives like a dream and I am getting great mileage. I remember the best miles I got at each stage when I got my high of 17.4 as an average this fall and I am blowing it away. At least + 1-2 mpg ON WINTER BLEND. I am amazed, but this truck was been a godsend with the mileage. I was doing incredible when I went on a long trip with my gf last night down to Cape Cod... It kept showing mid 20s and would go up to 30s and 40 on slight declines and only drop to 18-21 on hills. It's nuts.

Hello!

All I can even think of is you have one hell of a crack pipe...

You need to share!

That's amazing - no need for anyone to doubt you have an anomalous truck - it can happen

One thing I have noticed on my Gryphon is the average mpg shown is a mile or two per gallon higher than what I am actually getting according to the trip meter and my own calculations? But I am not sure which is correct. When I reset my tires size on the Gryphon does it correct the trip/odometer on the truck as well? I finally have the tire size right according to my speedometer and a local radar display.

I'm not doubting him. I have heard a few others claim similar results. I just want to find out the magic formula so I can get 20 too!

I don't even use the Average... I use TFT, RPM's, Batter volt and Instant MPG. I got my tire size as close as I could but I may measure it to dial it in at some point to get it dead on. I'm not sure if it changes the Odometer... one of the experts may know that one. One hint... play around with your highway speed... I do under 70 on the highway... 67 at 1830 rpms yields me the best it seems
