HA... Nicely put... In all reality good luck with that!!! IMO the best investment I have put on my truck was the edge, however if you indeed are planning on expanding I would definately go with the gryphon. It comes with canned tunes that are slightly more aggressive than that of the evo. It would cost you more to get an edge and have it converted to the gryphon. I BELIEVE if you already own the gryphon you can order the custom tunes and have them updated online... I am pretty sure that is what I read. Good luck

If you think you will get a CAI, defintiely go Gryphon. I have the custom tunes, even without the CAI, and they are definitely better than the Edge canned tunes.

I'm in much the same boat, looking at possibly something for a '07 F150 5.4 with True Flow intake tube (low restriction?) and cat back exhaust.

Is a Gryphon the same as an Edge Evo, ... just with different tuning ... or are the canned tunes the same?

And where is the Gryphon available?

Gryphons are the same hardware as the Edge, they come default with canned tunnes that are either the same or very close to the Edges (Some say they are the same, others say they are tweeked to be a little better, I dunno). I was torn between the Edge and the Gryphon but after talking with a couple members went with the Gryphon. Currently I am still running canned tunes, but man what a difference. If you think you may ever add anything to your truck that may require a new tune (i.e CAI) then go with the Gryphon. You can always upgrade an Edge to a Gryphon later, but might as well do it now so you dont have to send off your edge later. You can get the Gryphon right away with canned tunes, and then have custom tunes sent to you via email once they are complete. You can get a gryphon by going to: http://gopowerhungry.com/index.html

Have you seen the SCT Xcal3 custom tuned by one of the reputable tuners? Many others and myself have had great luck with the Xcal3 custom tuned by VMP Tuning.

http://www.vmptuning.com/store/index...=226&parent=66

I actually had an Edge before I got my SCT Xcal3 and while it did increase the performance, it made the truck feel 'sketchy'. It didn't shift right at all and made the driveability horrible. If you're going to get a cold air intake in the future than you're going to need a custom tuned programmer too. When the MAF sensor's housing tube size changes you must tune it accordingly otherwise you could run lean or rich. A larger MAF tube will make your truck run leaner and detonation is what kills motors.

OK ... helps a lot.

I take it canned tunes can be reloaded after visits to dealerships whether or not they reflash the PCM where as custom tuunes may not work after a reflash?

I also may be misunderstanding what y'all refer to as cold air intakes. Mine still uses the stock air box with stock type filter and simply replaces stock intake tube with silencer with a more rounder large tube set going to the fender inner panel where it has a larger bell end extended into the fender. There is no change to the air box itself or any hot air tubes.

I'm starting to think mine is not a "CAI" as spoken of.

Truck does have SI/DO cat back system.

Canned tunes work OK?

How do y'all attach the pod so it's easy to remove for dealer visits?

Yes ... I have been searching, my head hurts from it all ... haha. There's a lot here and for one on "45.2 kbps dial up", it's tough.

There are more reasons to get custom tunes than CAI. My truck is basically stock and the custom tunes are well worth the money in just the shifting/downshifting improvements over the canned tunes. Plus, my 87 Perf is as strong as the Level 3 premium fuel canned tune.

The Gryphon/Edge pod just "snaps" on to your dash. You just lift it off when you visit the dealer.

The canned tunes can be reloaded as long as your unit contains the HEX file that the dealers relash has just loaded in the PCM. If it is not in the unit, then normally, you can do an update on the computer and get it. I have custom tunes and I tell the service manager that under no circumstances are they to reflash my PCM. It has never been a problem.

I'm one for modding stuff up....just puts a smile on face I guess. but when I first purchased my 150 early OCT. I had an edge on order 4 days later. Well I thought i would just buy the edge for now and upgrade it to a gryphon later. Well it just so seems that i tried bringing my truck back to stock to see how it acted after being on a canned level 2.......can't live without it....and definate not for.....4-6 weeks. So.....i have a buddy with a 150...sold him my edge and bought a gryphon with custom tunes. REALLY>>>>REALLY>>>>REALLY, wish i would have gone with the gryphon from the get go. my 2 cents

Well, I do greatly appreciate the feedback. I've been researching, reading old posts, looking at the pluses of the different tuners. Besides the Edge or Gryphon, considering the SC 1865.

Man, there are a lot of choices out there.

I just purchased a Edge Evo to go on my 2007 F150. The tranny program #1 work excellent. It fixed what Ford could not. Just for this it was worth the $$.
Now here comes the problem. When I installed Program #2 Tow/Haul my truck threw a code and started running crappy. I was able to clear the code but my truck would not run on Programs 2 or 3. I sent the code to edge and they told me that the Evo could not be used with a CAI. I have a Roush CAI that I spent good money on and did not like the idea of pulling it and putting the stock back on. So Edge told me to contact Bill @ Power hungry performance. After talking to Corey Bills wife and emailing bill. I have now shipped my edge overnight to them for a custom program. They have you fill out a questionaire that gives them the details on your truck. They will load the best program based on what you want. I am going with the 87 performance program. I will let you know how it works out. Long story short if you have or are planning on installing a cold air intake do not buy the Edge Evo. Go right to Bill and get the gryphon.

Not trying to steal this thread, only trying to add to it, but as far as quality and performance go how do php and vmp compare? Has anyone had experience with both?
