Edge question about tunes.
Edge question about tunes.
Hey guys/girls! I just have a few questions reguarding the Edge Evolution programmer. It is sitting here in the box right next to me but I can't open it because my girlfriend bought it for me for Christmas. Ugh, the wait!!!!!
Anyway, I have a 2005 F-150 STX 4x4 Regular Cab 4.6. Pardon my inexperience to the whole programming world. My questions:
1. I believe there is 3 tunes: transmission, towing, performance? I don't want to go all out with the performance because of the 91 octane gas (but atleast I have the option). Question is, can I run 87 on the "Towing tune"? And can I run the towing tune all the time?
2. Can you change the "passing gear" (or when it downshifts when you go to pass someone). Mine downshifts a little too soft now.
3. I'm not looking at making this thing fast, I just want a little more power. How often do you have to update it?
-Thanks!

If it works fine, don't update it. I never updated mine. You can create problems fixing something that isn't broke.
Yes, you can run the 87 tow tune all the time, however, it is weak at higher rpms, not real good on the highway and passing.
You shifting and downshifting will be much improved, but downshifting is the biggest failure with the canned tunes, to me. Would not always downshift when I needed to go. That is the greatest benefit of the custom tunes, to me. That and the fact my 87 Perf tune is as straong as the 91 octane level 3.

To custom tune an Edge, you have to send the unit to PHP and have them convert it to a Gryphon. They then write whatever tunes you want and send it back.

I want to amplify and add my $0.02 worth on what Bluejay just told you.
First, the tow and transmission tunes ARE 87 octane tunes. I originally had an Edge too, and the only tune I used before I got it converted to a Gryphon was the 87 tow tune. It improved my shifting, and in my case, even my downshifting when I wanted to pass someone. Bluejay has constantly stated that the power fell off at higher rpms, but that was not my experience. I suspect different trucks may simply respond differently.
I also got improved gas mileage using that tow tune compared to stock, about 1-1.5 mpg better as I recall. Again, this may vary quite a lot among different vehicles.
It's also possible that the firmware (in my unit) corrected some of the deficiencies Bluejay has reported. I think Jim had his unit custom tuned even before I got my Edge. I know I updated the firmware using a "beta" file that edge had published to cure a tranny shudder upon Bill Cohron's recommendation, so we were effectively using different units.
If you find your shifts are STILL too soft (I didn't), you can increase the "firmness" using the custom options menu. Before you do any of that, read through this link, several times, so you get it right: http://www.forum.gopowerhungry.com/s...ead.php?t=1101 It was written for the Gryphon, but it applies to the Edge. And, in the Edge/Gryphon, "firmness" does not change line pressure, it simply changes the interval between clutch release and lockup.
Don't go crazy on changing the shift firmness, though I think Bluejay used +12 for 1-2, +12 for 2-3 and +9 for 3-4. But, the canned tunes will already change the firmness, so drive it for a while without changing anything to see how it feels.
And, I agree totally with Bluejay on not updating the firmware unless Edge tells you to.

had my edge now for a month. am running tow tune and notice alot more power and no problem when trying to pass. i have not noticed what bluejay has, when i step on it it go's and like right now, no hesitation for me. was also wondering myself if running tow tune all the time was o.k. but seem's to be from what i am reading on here. just my 2c worth.
i am running an Edge on my 4.6 i was a little disappointed with the downshifts at first it improved a little once i switched to lvl3 but i still wanted more so i talked to Jack and he helped me set the torque converter lock and unlock settings and it change the way my truck shifts down it holds gears longer and i don't have completely floor it to shift down
well passing
so when u do get it all set up try setting all the Torque converter lock and un-lock settings set to there max positive values and see how you like that
and you should not have to upgrade if you had an 07 or newer you would most likely have to cause they changed some things on the stock tunes if i recall???

Thanks for all the info guys!
I mainly just want some more power to go uphill. I know this sounds strange but the truck absoutly hates hills. It takes all I have to keep it the same speed while going up any hill.

Try the truck in various conditions, such as hill climbing and passing, and try to decide if you're happy or not. If you still think it needs more power, about the only thing you can do is INCREASE the part throttle shift and torque converter unlock/lock points (which will make them happen at a somewhat higher rpm). This will keep the truck in lower gears longer, or will increase the tendency to downshift under load, which should give you the feeling of power you want).
I, on the other hand, felt the truck was too eager to downshift under light load, so I DECREASED the shift and TC unlock/lock points.

Usually edge sends theirs out with the latest firmware. If purchased somewhere else the paper could be in the box due to the "possiblity" of the edge sitting on a shelf for awhile.
Won't hurt to call edge and see what they have to say.
I had to update mine. I hooked it up to my truck and tried to program it. It nuked the ECM...it said something about files not matching...I don't really remember. I couldn't start my truck...I was quite scared. I hooked it up to the computer, created a fusion account, got the update and then tried re-programming. It worked perfectly then.
