Used Edge

I have a chance to buy a used Edge for my 4.6 with 3.55 gears. Not real sure about buying used electronics. It is about 6 months old and can no longer be used as the fellow has add various mods that eliminated the Edge.
I do not know the guy. The cost is about half of a new one. I really know nothing about these programmers so it would be easy to rip me off. Could there be a problem with this Edge? Opinions please.

#1 is it unlocked?

#2 it seems fishy since he could just had it upgraded to a gryphon so it could be custom programed

#3 I don't know how you can add enough mods to eliminate custom tuning (or he doesn't know about the gryphon) without running a stand alone fuel/ignition/trans setup

Has installed a supercharger, Rouse locked out the ECU with tuning software. Also has a BBK 80MM throttle body and a Volant Intake for sale.

the throttle body will not fit your 2 valve truck and as long as the edge is unlocked then go for it

Yes, with those mods, he would need custom tuning and probably went a different direction. As long as his truck was returned to stock, it should be good. You can then at some point, convert it to the Gryphon, if you want custom tunes. You will save some money.

You won't know until you plug it in. If it displays your HEX and is ready to move forward, it's unlocked. If not, it still contains his stock tune, and is locked. You just have to ask and trust him.

Even if it's locked, PHP can unlock it for you. So your risk is minimal, may just not save as much as you could have. That is a good price and leaves you lots of wiggle room.

Ask him point blank if he used the Edge to return his truck back to stock. If he did, then your ok. If he did not, then it will cost you $75 to get this Edge unit set back to stock.

Ask for a pic of the Edge installed in his truck that shows the zero in the upper right corner of the display. This shows that he has in fact returned his PCM back to stock form thus unlocking the Edge from his vehicle. I bought a used Edge from someone on this forum using this method and am happy with my results.

Another question, For better fuel milage is it best to use the Tow option even though you are not towing, or is the performance option best with 91 octain?

You'll probably get better gas mileage using the 91 octane tune, but it could cost you more. You'll have to experiment. If the percentage increase in MPG is greater than the cost per gallon percentage increase, you're saving money with the higher octane tune. But, you'll probably see better gas mileage with either tune, over the stock tune.
