PHP 87 Economy Tune

I talked this over with Bluejay, Jack and Janet, and Tarajerame. It is what I want to get for a tune when I order, but who here has ordered an 87 economy? Please tell me your mpg gains from them if any.

Thanks guys

I dont think its an 87 economy tune, its called the 87 Performance tune, but you gain in your economy from the better shifting and unleashed power behind the OEM tuning. I have an 87 Perf. in my 04 5.4 4wd and its a beast. I can the Level 3 canned 91 tune with 93 octane and 1.5 timing and minorly adjusted shifts and the 87 Perf. file by Bill is much better. I raced my buds '03 5.3 Z71 before I ever got the programmer and he got me by damn near 3 lengths, after burning 93 i got him by 1.5 - 2 lengths and after the 87 tune I got him by about 2.5 lengths. For a 5600lb Modular V8 Ford to whoop a 4800lb pushrod Chevy is very impressive to me.

Now on a more mature perspective, my economy stats have improved slightly in city and vastly on highway. Before I got the average 14 - 15 city, 15.5 - 17.1 average, and 18.4 highway is the best I could ever get at 70mph. Now I'm averaging the same for city but with a little bit more low end and firmer shifts I gained a couple tenths. My average is the same but upwards of 18.1 if set at a set speed, and my highway is 21.2 at 70mph with a/c on speed 3. Thats all hand calculated also. I watch my Gryphon AVG mpg display but it changes too much to fully abide by.

( I dont encourage you to go racing though lol, we know our side roads and were willing to accept any consequences, such as a deer leaping out :o )

Thanks for the reply Darren. Good to hear you saw an improvment. I have been working on my order form and have been writing my preferences for more on the side of economy. I would never race. That would be a risk I would never take and could never do that too my truck... she's to precious to me.

TruckGuy, when you fill out your form, you'll see that there is a box on the second page where you can tell us anything you'd like to know. That's where I'd put in that you're really looking for fuel economy, so that Bill can make sure your tuning meets your needs.

with an economy tune, do you lose any power? i would love to have the power of lv 3 and 91 octane gas, but i cant afford the expensive gas, and the more MPG i gain the better.

If i can gain Lv3 performance, and gain a mpg or more, i'd be a happy camper... i guess i'd have to switch to lv 2 when i tow my 4000 lb boat though...

And TruckGuy - It's what I did. I told Bill what I wanted, in an "attached" sheet that I faxed to him. I did not want to burn rubber of the starting line. I wanted good cruise mileage. I wanted to be able to pass other vehicles quickly and with no "lag" if necessary. I was not interested in "driving around town", because I don't really use my truck there. And, so on.

All these things I told to him, including pictures of my truck with the cap and anything else I could think of.

This is what custom tuning is all about - regardless of the tuner you eventually go with.

shorse - an economy tune will not kill your power. If you drop the hammer, you are off any "economy" setting and are running on a fuel table.

Basically, an economy tune will set your shifting to get you into higher gears sooner, and, will set you at the leanest "reasonable" setting when you are in a "no-load" cruise condition.

Can you get more power out of 91 octane compared to 87 octane gas? Yes, but it will cost more to fill your tank and, it may or may not net you less cost per tank of fuel.

You DO want to use a towing tune when you tow. You'll get better performance and it will be kinder to your transmission.

I don't understand. Are you asking for a "tune form", because you already have a Gryphon and don't want to buy another? If so, you could simply indicate this in the "remarks" section of the standard order form, or, send them a FAX telling them what you want.

What's wrong with communication? TALK to the people writing your tunes! It's the only way you're going to get what you want..
