Big difference between 87 and 91?

I have a 04 5.4 Screw with a K&N intake and a SI/SO magnaflow. Im going to be ordering a Gryphon tuner in the next couple weeks and I cant decide if Iwant to get the custom perfomance tune with 87 octane or 91 octane. does anyone have these tunes? And if you have 91 octane is there a noticable difference??

Thanks,
CrzyIrishBstrd

First, be careful with that CAI on an 04 before you get CUSTOM tunes. You may be running lean. Next, you can get the Gryphon and try the canned tunes before making a decision on which custom tunes to get. My custom 87 Performance tune is better than the canned high performance tune. I kept the canned towing tune, and got an 87 Perf and a 93 Perf. I use the 87 Perf nearly all the time.

i had been running level 2 for a few months... i loved the sheer force it had at lower speeds... awesome for in town, and towing was a breeze...

monday i put in some 91 oct and level 3..... HOLY COW, what a difference... i now have full power throughout the speeds... i drive mostly highway, and when i went to go above 65, the truck would take its time... now it just flies...

i had been getting 13 mpg consistently with 87 oct and level 2.... i had gotten 15 mpg with stock tunes.... today driving home the gryphon read 17 MPG!!! thats on L3 and 91...

i will never use level 2 for just driving ever again... the 91 oct is where it's at...

canned tuned wise.... i have heard bills 87 perf custom tunes are just as good

is the canned level 3 a 91 oct tune or 93...

on the gryphon, it says 93 performance.... but i've heard it is 91, and if you run 93 you need to bump the timing up 1 point

Shorse - this seems to be a point of confusion. I'm betting Level 3 is REALLY 91+ octane, because that stuff is pretty much the standard for so-called "high-test" and it would not make sense to put the baseline at 93 octane. Please don't confuse what I just said with gas at high altitudes - high-test there will easily be 90 octane or perhaps less due to the anti-detonation effects of altitude.

I have a Gryphon which is a PHP converted Edge. My Edge manual says Level 3 is 91+ octane (meaning, you can run 91 octane or higher at that tune setting).

If I filled the tank with 93 octane, I'd try advancing the spark by 1 degree.

And remember, we're talking USA octane (R + M)/2 numbers here, NOT the RON octane ratings used in most of the rest of the world.

Hopefully, this is not too confusing!

Custom tuners can make more power with higher octane fuel.

Higher octane fuel cost more per gallon.

You just have to decide if you can afford the extra twenty cents at the pump.

It will cost you the same for an 87 octane tune, or a 91 octane tune. Why pay for less power?

That's what I ordered, just waiting on the tunes now...

BTW, here's an interesting article about octane:

I just got my Gryphon back, on the 87 Performance tune, my seat of the pants feeling so far is that the "Canned" Edge 91 performance program had more get up and go, PHP's 87 performance seems smoother and doesn't have that kick ya in the butt feeling to it.

Burning 93 with 1.5 timing my truck seems to like it very much. With light throttle each quarter tank i'm no longer getting 90 miles, i'm now getting 110 - 120.

On my truck, the 87 Perf seemed about the same as far as power. The big difference is the downshifting of the 87 Perf when I need to pass or get out of the way. The canned level 3 had spots where it would not downshift.

I think you should get a 91 tow tune as well. You'll want to make more power as you're towing.
