Canned tunes question
Canned tunes question
I have an 04 5.4. Therefore I would need a custom tune for a cai instead of a canned tune because of the lean issue. My question is for as long as this motor has been out, almost 5 yrs, shouldn't programmer manufactures figured out the lean condition of these motors.
Also, some say that the edge is the best for canned tunes, are they the best canned tunes for a cai, maybe not running as lean as the others?
What about banks for example, they have their own cai and programmer. Does the combo of their cai and programmer not result in a lean condition as others run into. If so then why all of the test and developement to still result in a lean condition?
Any answers would be nice for in the future I will be getting a cai and programmer.

bluejay, did you use your evo before getting it custom tuned by php with your drop in filter, or did you send it directly to php before using it on your truck? Just wondering how the before and after was?
I used thecanned tunes for over 30,000 miles with the drop in filter and thought they were wonderful. I used the Level 3 with 93 octane. The only thing I disliked was that it did not kickdown into a lower gear when I wanted it to. I got the custom tune and it is worth every penny. Even better performance and much better shifting.

Bluejay, am I wrong or is the "drop in filter" pretty much a "non-mod" as far as Edge/Gryphon stock tunes go? Isn't it just the increased airflow provided by a bigger intake tube we have to worry about?

Yes, you're correct. The drop-in lets more air thru than a paper filter, but nothing like the CAI.

The Drop-in does not affect the Mass Air Meter reading like a CAI does. Most manufacturers of cold air kits make a slight modification to to the diameter of the tubing which in many cases can cause a lean condition. Some even completely relocate the MAF sensor close to the filter instead of by the throttle body.
As to the OP about programmers and running lean, they don't... As long as you don't modify the vehicle to any great extent. Even minor exhaust mods are relatively insignificant in comparison to the CAI kits as far as Air/Fuel Ratio.
Hope this helps.
