edge evolution programmer in a 97?

will this correct my spedo for tires and gear ratios or do i not have the computer in my truck? it is a 1997 F150 ext. cab with a 4.6l engine in it. also, do these things work even if my odometer is working? my odometer doesnt work anymore and this programmer says it will tell you current mpg but if my odo doesnt work will it still do this? also, is this worth getting? i have always wanted one but i am not sure how good of buy they are. how much more power will i get out of my truck with this on there? also any suggestions or comments on this is greatly appreciated. Thanks

first off, no, it wont correct your speedo. i have a '98 and i called bill at php and he said that it will only correct the speedo if you have a digital odometer. '98 was the first year it was introduced, but it was optional. mine has the manual odo.

second, it will tell average mpg and instant mpg. but im not sure how accurate the ampg is. it reads the mileage from the pcm. then again, if your odo doesnt work because you changed the tire size, then neither will the ampg. of course, you can just figure out the ratio of stock tire size/current tire size and multiply the nuber of miles according to the odo by it. this will tell you your actual miles, then figure out the mpg at the pump. thats the most accurate way of figuring out your mpg.

if you are looking at the edge, i would recommend getting the gryphon(a re-branded, custom tuned edge) from php. it can be custom tuned, meaning it can be better suited to your needs. acording to his website, you can see results of up to 25 hp and 40 ft/lbs of torque. couple that with a CAI and free flowing exhaust, and you might be able to put down numbers like the 5.4L

i recently talked to bill, and he said that with the new firmware, he *might* be able to get the digital readout of speed on the gryphon to read correctly. but he said he needed to look into it more, so i wouldnt get my hopes up. but just give bill a call. even if you decide not to get the gryphon, you are learning about the edge, since they have the same hardware.

the odometer isnt working just because it stopped one day. i already had the tires on it and everything. i think it is just old. it says 213000 but my guess is that it stopped working probably 10,000 miles ago. thats my best guess. but i cant even figure my mpg at the pump because i cant tell how far i have gone. will the edge be able to tell me how far i have gone?

im not really sure, but i think that it depends on whats broken. if its just the little wheels in the dashboard, then yeah, probably will work. if its something closer to the wheels, then the pcm might not be able to read the right numbers. but then again, if your speedo is working at all, then it is probably just a problem in the dashboard. but since you cannot change the tire size, then it will be off no matter what unless bill can correct it in the gryphon's display, or if there is another device that can display the correct info.

thanks for letting me know. i just asumed because it says in the edge manual that it can only correct the 98+ with the digital odo's.

just got off the phone with bill ordering my custom tunes and got some great news. he said it wouldnt be a problem to correct the display on the edge/gryphon.

im sorry bill! i should have never doubted you!!

so your problem is solved. spend the extra $100 to get a custom tuned gryphon and it will display an accurate speed and mpg's!

the gryphon display will be accurate. your manual speedometer(the needle) will still be off, but the mpg and the digital speed display on the gryphon will be accurate.

now how does it read how many miles you have traveled? because my odometer doesnt work so if it reads miles off of that, it wouldnt work...? or does it read it from the computer some how? im still trying to figure out why my odometer doesnt work. it cant be the gear on the tranny because the spedo works still. so i guess the computer still recieves the miles right?

***** - it sounds to me like you have a display problem. I don't think the Gryphon displays miles driven, but it does display speed and average miles per gallon.

The Gryphon reprograms your truck's computer, so whatever is in that computer effects your dashboard display (if it's working). Unfortunately, it sounds like your odometer feed from the computer is not functioning. I don't think the Gryphon can correct that.

I highly recommend you call Bill at PHP and explain your problem. He will talk straight with you - if the Gryphon can fix it he''l tell you, if not he'll tell you that too. Additionally, I suspect he might have some ideas to get your odometer working again.

Bill's a good guy! You have nothing to lose, except the cost of a phone call. Make sure your number is not "blocked" when you call - he doesn't answer "blocked" calls. (I wouldn't either, in his position).
