Is it worth it for me...Gryphon?

Only 5 days left of the sale and I think I am 95% sold on a Gryphon.

Here is my driving style. I drive 10 miles total a day for work (1.8 miles one way). On a big week I drive into town for gas and to the bank, that is a 7 mile, one way trip. I tow a pop-up about 6 times a year and a small boat, under 1000 lbs. boat and trailer. I don't drive WOT all the time and I have no mods to the engine (4.6 ltr.) She is plain jane and stock....for now.

Every now and then we'll take the "black hole" to dinner or to the grandparents house (50 miles one way) and every now and then we'll load the back end with dirt, wood, mulch or whatever we need to haul.......SO,,, is it worth $469.00 for a tuner for me? I would really like to hear your thoughts on this!! Thanks guys and gals.

adding;;;;; I always fill it up with 87 octane.

I drive my truck more than that. I have 75,000 in 3 and a half years, but, even if I drove it only as much as you, I would never do without one. The change in shifting characteristics and downshifting alone would be worth it to me. If mine ever goes out, I will instantly order another.

DANG blujay....I just hit the send button!! So, that sounds like it is well worth it then, I guess you really like it?

I am also guessing that I would want an 87 econo, 87 towing and 87 performance for my tunes? What say you?

The canned tunes that comes with it are an 87 towing and a 91 performance(adjust the timing for 93). For your custom tunes, what you lined out sounds good. I kept the 87 towing tune and got an 87 Performance and a 93 Performance. I seldom tow and run the 87 Performance most of the time. Occasionally, fo a little more fun, I'll run the 93 Performance, but there is not a lot of difference in the two on my truck. The tunes really make my truck fun to drive. It was a dog on the stock tune with so much hesitation that it was dangerous.

I have another question for you guys. Once you load in your tune, custom or canned, can you remove the unit and still keep your tune without the display hooked up?

I was wondering the same thing as you. I have an 04 4.6l 2wd that is my daily driver. I very rarely tow a small boat for a buddy but the most mine will see is baseball gear or a kids dirtbike in it. I drive probably 35 miles each way to work and in my off time I do alot of traveling in it. I want the performance (ie. bottom end torque, shift points, and converter issues on downshifts). I live extremely close to PHP but I cant seem to make up my mind due to so many different options and opinions. Im not a cheap *** by any means but I dont want to **** away a few hundred dollars on some junk that doesnt or wont work for what I want. Any help would be greatly appreciated...

yes, for the Gryphon, it loads in to the truck PCM and you do not have to use the monitor, but, if I were not going to use the monitor, I would just get the Xcal3 as it has no monitor.

I ask because there are just a few areas around here that I don't want to have the nice display displayed when I park the truck, know what I mean. It would suck to come out and find a smashed window or worse and to see that little gem gone. Out of sight out of mind...or something like that.

Thanks again Jim for the answer!

I'll add to Jim's post (it's called "beating a dead horse" - something I'm good at).

It's super simple to remove and replace the Gryphon if you don't want it up on the dash. The mount just "sits" up there without needing to be screwed on or held in any other way and the cable to the OBD port simply unplugs from the back of the unit.

You can take the unit off the dash and you'll just have the small cable end sticking up next to the A-pillar making the unit super easy to reinstall.

Hey guys, I want to say thanks to you for helping me decide. I did talk to Corey and ordered my Gryphon it arrived today and is installed......WHOLLY CHIT man

They are only the canned tunes at the moment and NOW I understand what you guys try to describe as "My truck finally woke up"! I can't even wait 4 more weeks till the custom tunes are done......

Thanks again guys! This place rocks!

Glad you "bit the bullet" and jumped in! It's hard to get the concept of how much a tuner improves a truck across to someone sitting on the fence, but when you try it, you know!

Now, the custom tunes WILL be better, but, don't look for such a drastic change again. It's more like a "polish" on what was a good start. My experience was about 0.7mpg better using my custom towing tune over the stock Level 2 tune, as well as better passing power while towing.

I've just gotten an 87 octane economy tune and will be interested to see what it does. I've been getting an honest 15.2-15.5mpg on the highway while not towing.
