As far as I know, it does "all of the above".

A custom tune will improve your performance, and you'll love it. I'm pretty sure the programmer Troyer tunes also allows you to recalibrate for tire size and gear ratio changes. I know the Gryphon from PHP lets you do this and I think the XCal does too.

dirtrider, you should get the 9400, not the 9100

I know there's a price difference, but worth it IMO, and the price listed is wrong, it's less

Do not buy the "blue chip" ... Buy a custom tuned Xcal2 or Xcal3.

If you go custom tuning from TP, make sure you order 12 weeks before you actually do the gears and tires if all you do is plan to recal. for them.

what is the actual difference in the two tuners? doesnt the 9100 let me use the custom tunes from troyer also, and money realy is an issue so if i get the same end result its worth it even if it takes longer, is harder to do or anything else

the biggest difference is the 9100 isn't CAN compatable

the 9400 will tune all the oldies and 04's and up

Controller Area Network (CAN)

you don't have it, 04 3-valves were the first year so the 9100 will work just fine on your 98

dirtrider596979,

I think it's time that you gave Troyer a call. Talk to him. He seems to love talking to people and is known for 90 minute conversations.

While you're at it, end the call with, "thanks for all the information, now I'll need to think about everything you just said, I'll call back when I'm ready to order".

Then give the competition a call. Talk to VMP Tuning & Power Hungry Performance to see what they can do for you. When the price difference is only a couple of hundred dollars, and you're doing something that effects a truck worth tens of thousands of dollars, you should get what's right. If it means that you can't buy it right away, then save your money for when you can afford what works best for you and your truck. What are we talking about here? $250 vs $400? This is an investment that you can't nickel and dime. Would you settle for cheaper, mediocre tires that only give you 60% of the traction, just because they cost 40% less?

You've already surfed the web and seen what's available on the websites. You need the input from the pros who will be selling you their product. Not the biased opinions of the "fan club" on this forum. Just because I have Troyer Performance tunes and I love them; doesn't mean they'll be good for you and what you want for your truck.

The SCT 9100 has not been around for a long time, and as others have said, it will only work on older non-ETC trucks. The price is very good, but remember you'll be getting an older device. Just tradeoffs, like many things in life.
