Hey Thumper, I have a 2000 5.4L f150 and I wanted to get the Edge and the AF1 without the custom tunes. Will it run lean? I thought this only happened on the 04 and up. I still might get custom tunes but dont know if I will have the cash or not.

I know what you are talking about now, at the filter end, the roush intake may be 4", but the other end is flattened out where the MAF sensor is. An intake will only flow what the smallest area will allow, kinda like a chain is only as strong as it's weakest link. The roush, and it's twin the airraid are chocked off at the TB end where the MAF sensor is restricting flow, the oval shape flows about as much as a 2.75 dia tube, well within the limits of the stock tune. That's why it doesn't throw a code.

Any exhaust mods will not affect the tune, so do what you want. Running a CAI with the edge may make your engine run lean, but it wont kill your truck. You can run the edge with a CAI and a cat-back and will probably never have a problem, you'll just be a little lean. Eventually you should just a custom tune to solve the lean condition.

the 97-03's are as temporomental as the 04-08 5.4's -especially the 04's,the addition of some intakes on edge canned tunes cause droning-try jody @dp tuner for tunes

I.d.

I agree with what your saying. But if the throttle body stays the stock diameter any size tubing would have to be reduced down to that size therefore restricting it at that point. Am I correct? So if a 4" tube was flattened the volume of the I.D. wouldnt change but the flow characteristics may and either way it would still have to go through the stock throttle body opening at the end. Its like working with true dual 2.5" through a DIDO or running a SISO 4" after a y pipe which flows better or has better low end or top end power . Im getting more baffled by the minute.

another question on droning

Well Is droning as it is so lovingly refered to a sign of something wrong or something bad happening? yes I have it . It doesnt really bother me so much. as its only durring certain RPM ranges at certain throttle positions.

I ran my stock Edge with my K&N CAI with no problems OR running lean!
Ran both together for 3 months with no issues. However I did get a custom tune from Bill and Im sure he had some adjustments for it. I do know hes tunes made a world of differance in shifting! I love my custom tune from Bill!

Ok, try this. On the roush intake, the tube gets smaller and flattens out where the MAF sensor is (the plug on the drivers side of the tube) and then gets larger before the 90 degree turn down into the TB. At the narrowest point in the tube is like a venturi, air flow velocity may increase slightly, but the actual CFM is at it's lowest. The CFM (cubic feet per minute) or volume of air is what the MAF reads, not velocity. When the intake flows more CFM than the stock tune knows what to do with, the truck throws a code. Most manufactures of CAI's engineer some sort of resriction into their intakes to keep the airflow within the stock parameters, some of the more common methods are, small diameter tubes, a restriction or venturi in the tube, and making a portion of the tube another shape other than round (fluid dynamics will show a perfectly round tube will flow more than any other shape of an equal size)

How do you know? Did you put it on a dyno? I was running lean with the Edge and S&B CAI and it never threw a code.

Yes, get custom tunes from Bill at PHP.
