Edge and CAI
Finally people are addressing the question Ive been asking over and over. I currently am using an edge, with my Roush CAI , wich by the way is like 4" + just before the filter housing. I am about to install the Roush Offroad cat back. On an 05 with the 5.4.*****Would I be best off to set it back to the stock tune when I install the cat back? **** Ive been using both the level 3 and level 2 canned tunes. I plan on talking to bill about a Gryphon, but that may be a little while off as I have been dropping some cash on the truck lately. Any help PLEASE J.B.
Jon,
Just give Bill a call. You'll be glad you did! I know I am!
My order is on it's way!! He can help you with your questions, even if you're not ready to upgrade yet, but when you find out the price, I'm sure you will!!

Well Its like this . I hadnt heard that the edge programmers were only meant to run with stock intakes, prior to me finding this forum. so that is what I bought because I liked its features. I also liked the performance gains I recieved. I have the 50 mph shutter that I have read about here. but havent updated anything in fear of making matters worse. overall I have been happy with the Edge. I ran on level 3 almost all the time untill I got layed off for a couple weeks and gas money was kinda tight so I stepped down a notch. Now I have a longer commute to work , still short, but Im using twice the gas so Im keeping it on level 2 untill some expected OT kicks in . After reading about the size of the AF1 intakes and the related tuning issues I measured my Roush intake O.D. just over 4" . so I figure its 4" I.D. . I have yet to put it on the Dyno. But Ive found the one Im going to use. about an hour or so away. I was wondering if I could jut get the inspection station guy ( who seems pretty cool about programmers and such) to run it on his machine and get the a/f ratio. I dont know the capabilities of those Dynos. in MA. they dont use them if you have the OBD port. thats all they use. I know this was a long story but Im glad I got some kind of reply. I just wonder if Ive already been running lean with the stock system? or if I will be with the Offroad system using the canned tunes? Wordy Yes I am.
The Edge canned tunes add about 25 HP to a stock truck or one with only exhaust. P;us, the shifting is much improved. You have gauges. I would not do without the Edge and even more so now that I have custom tunes.

Yes, I also wouldn't want to go without the added gauges Its the nicest , cleanest arangement Ive had, location is key. I use the speedo on my Edge primarily as I have to duck my head to see that gauge through the wheel on the stock instumentation. Im just trying to get some answers so I dont burn some valves . Im shure once I talk to Bill , I will have a better knowledge of where Ive been and where Im going.
I really doubt that the intake has a I.D. of 4". If that's the case than it's the biggest air intake and should flow the best. However I do not think that's the case. I believe the AF1 is the biggest and has the most flow out of any air intake on the market. If you were running a 4" air intake, you're definitely running lean, very dangerously.
Jon, Just because the tube is just over 4" in diameter doesn't mean anything. What counts is the tube diameter where the MAF sensor is. I can almost gaurantee that it is 3" or less at the maf sensor. I say this because the roush intake does not require a custom tune to run it, the only intakes that require a tune is the air force 1 in the 3.25" (discontinued) and the 3.5" sizes. The stock tune (and the edge tunes) can only tolerate small changes in the intake air flow without throwing a code. The AF 1 3.25/3.5 flows more air than the stock tune can handle, therfore the mass air transfer function has to be altered in the tune to prevent throwing a code. The AF 1 3" doesn't throw a code because it is just barely within the limits of the stock tune (some calibrations on the 04's still required a tune with the 3")
Roush Intake
I took some calipers to the O.D. the other day and right before the box it was definetly over 4". once I get the kids to bed tonight Ill go back out and measure it again. As with other plastic Intake tubes the shape changes as it heads toward the throttle body. It kind of flattens out so it would be hard to judge the actual inside volume. Im not a computer guy so Im not up to cutting and pasting any pictures but you could check out what Im talking about on E bay or Roush Performance. I was surprised to see it wqas over 4" when I checked it though. Based on what I have read about the differences of the AF 1's . Anyone else got the Roush intake to confirm The I.D.?
Throwing codes
I just got my state inspection 3 weeks ago. I set it back to stock tune ran it maybe 50 miles or so , with a highway run up a couple of exits . to get the temps up . and everything checked out fine. Ive never had any codes as far as I know. Dealer never said anything. So Im assuming what your saying is correct. 4" seemed huge to me. after what I have read. Like I said Im just trying to get some answers. I wouldnt think Roush would be selling the intakes if there was a possability of it causing a major failure. Not without some type of Disclaimer.

Plan of action
Put the Roush offroad cat back on, take it to the dyno. get the answer. If its running lean set it back to stock tune. Call BILL . remedy the situation. HOPEFULLY I HAVENT DONE ANY DAMAGE YET. Does this sound like a good way to go ?
Air box
The air box is an open style that has a rubber seal that seals it to the hood when its closed. check one out on E bay or Roush performance and youll see what Im talking about.
