Programmer Virgin
Programmer Virgin
Hello people,I'm wondering if anybody can help me out.I have never used a programmer before so forgive my ignorance.
I recently fouind myself the proud owner of a 96 150 with a 5.0 under the hood.It is running on brand new 31*10.50*15 's.A friend told my that my speedo will be innacurate and my transmission will not be changing at the correct points. He suggested I get a programmer to change this.
This is where I'm lost.I don't want to spend a great deal of money so I'm thinking of a hypertech III.
Anyone know if this is a good idea? How do I use it? Does it stay connected to truck at all times? What other features could I change?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

You're forgiven and welcome!
I "sort of" know the answers to some of your questions, but others will chime in here soon with "good" replies. The ONE thing I DO know is that you do not have to leave any programmer attached. The things I don't know are, "Which devices work with your truck and which of them (other than Gryphon/Edge, assuming it supports your model year) will correct for tire size/gear changes (but I think all do).
I Do know that Gryphon, an "upscale" version of Edge, will correct your speedo, shift points, etc. But, look at www.PowerHungryPerformance.com to see if Gryphon supports your truck.
Hope I'm being helpful!

The key here is that you have a '96. Do you have an OBDII port? Your car is old enough that a lot of products do not support it. Late model vehicles can use a Superchips Tirepaq.

Since you have a 96 with a 5.0L, more than likely you have the older E.E.C. III computer. They do not have the OBD II port. To reprogram the older systems, you have to get a chip to replace the data table with the new info. Another way is to get one of those programmers that intercept the signals from the ecm and sends its own out to the engine. If all your after is recalibrating your speedo, check and see if you have a speedo cable coming out of the side of the trans, if you do, just spend 89 cents and put in a new speedo gear.
