Edge worth the money?

Im considering buying and Edge Evo or other tuner. My questions are,
1. Will they decrease the life of the engine/tranny in any way?
2. Are they worth the price for them?
3. Ant down falls to having one? Ive heard of funny things happening to them like not letting your truck start or locking up? Whats up with this? I dont want one if its gonna make my truck unrelable. Some one shed some info for me please. Thanks for any help.
Oh I have an 06 4x4 Screw 5.4, with magnaflow single exhaust and K&N CAI. Thanks.

Go with the Gryphon from www.powerhungryperformance.com. Same as the Edge but with custom tunes and great support. I have had the Edge for almost 2 years, 38,000 miles with absolutely no problems. I loved the Edge with canned tunes, but the custom tunes are even better.

If you're set on having the Edge versus a tuner like the Xcal2 with custom tunes than I'd recommend getting the Gryphon instead of the Edge. If you don't care about the gauges than get a custom tuned Xcal2 from a place like VMP Tuning. Troyer offers good tunes too but they take half of a year to get them when VMP Tuning can do it in 1-3 weeks.

If the tuner is set-up properly there is no reason why your transmission's life should be decreased. If anything it should be increased. Soft shifts are more harmful on a transmission than a firm shift since it's technically slipping to create a smooth, soft shift. Yes tuners are worth the price, very much so. The Xcal2 is $395 with three custom tunes from VMP Tuning. The cool thing about the Xcal2 is that you can use it on any Ford vehicle with the ODB2 port which is nearly all of them. So if you get rid of your vehicle, return it to stock, get a new tune made for $50 and now you've got a new tuned vehicle and don't have to buy another tuner. Most of the problems are from the Edge but if you go with a Gryphon or Xcal2 you wouldn't have any of those problems.

I just want to say one thing here on this issue. "YES" its worth every cent you pay for one. I honestly dont know why Ford chokes these trucks down. Its a day and night differance. I previously set my truck back to its stock settings and ran like ***** and couldnt believe how much power it lost!!

yes they are, I put out a little example in this thread. I have a different model than you but I'm sure the results are similar. If you plan on getting an intake or modding your truck at all just skip the edge and get a gryphon so you can get custom tunes later. or if you don't care about the guages get an XC2 like thump mentioned

I'll agree with you 100%, BSL. Of course, as everyone knows by now, I'm partial to Gryphon. If I didn't want guages and didn't already have a tuner, the XC2 or 3 tuned by Justin Starkey at VMP would be my choice.

But, I really like the guages and would miss not having them now.

Of course, if I didn't have the gauges and wanted some, I could buy a Scanguage at about $150+. Then I'd have to figure out where to put it! (I don't like the mount down low in the ashtray I've seen in another post).

No im not related to Raptor05121 that i know of. now when you say "custom tines" what is that? Whats the difference between that and anything else, such as the Edge? Im new to the tuner thing but would like to get my facts straight before ordering/buying anything.

I'm not a programmer guru or anything, but basically, you tell PHP what it is that you want out of your truck ( i.e. economy, towing and perfomance at 87 oct or 94 or whatever) and they will set up tunes for your unit. I believe the Gryphon comes with "can tunes" and PHP can set it up where you can load the custom tunes yourself if your want. Other programers come as is and are generic and you don't have the option of changing them to fit your preferences. Custom Tunes from others like Troyer are fit to you preferences also but you don't get the gauges. I hope I explained this right because this is my understanding, if I didn't would someone please chime in and correct me. I'm always open to learning. I'm actually waiting to hear back from PHP to see about trading in my Edge for the Gryphon (I was reading that they may do this) and talk about possibly getting some Custome Tunes for my new ride.
