Edge question/CAI

Know that the edge was designed for a stock vehicle.
If I remove the stock intake and add a Volant CAI will I be safe running the edge since the truck is no longer stock. Or am I asking for trouble??

Asking for trouble especially with a closed box type of design. I have the S&B which is the came concept, just flows better than the Volant, and I had a HORRIBLE drone when I added the Edge to it. I also was running lean when I got on the dyno.

You really answered your own question. The Edge was designed for the stock intake. You run the risk of running lean. The answer is to get a custom tune from Power Hungry Performance if you want to keep both the Edge and a higher volume intake.

The Edge and a CAI is a No No!!! It will lean your engine out. Did so to me and many others. It's meant for a stock truck. If you are going to get a CAI, get custom tunes whether it be Troyer, VMP or whatever you choose.

I'm running an EDGE tuner (level 2) and a Volant....how can I tell if I'm lean? I don't have access to a Dyno where I am. I have an OBD II scanner...is there something I should look for. I've been running this way for the last month or so, about 2000 miles or so and haven't noticed any problems, except the occassional annoying drone at a certain speed/throttle level. I can't say I'm overly impressed with the volant CAI.

In my (somewhat biased) opinion, you should call Bill at PHP right away and talk to him about your problems. The solution is probably much less expensive than you are fearing.

From everything I've read in these forums, and from my experience in digital hardware and digital software design, there's no such thing as "one size fits all". You have to adjust your device everytime you make a change to your setup. This is where the software comes into play. The hardware in the tuner is "fixed", but the software can tell it how to perform.

So, any tuner you buy has this limitation. It has to be tuned for YOUR specific setup. In my opinion, you'd be happy with any of the "big three", but, since you already have an Edge, does it make sense to scrap it and try something completely different?

Again, talk to Bill. Trade the Edge in for a Gryphon with a custom tune. I'll bet you will be pleasantly surprised.

i just spoke with bill today and he said that running a CAI will require a entirely separate tune.

i will opt to not get a CAI since i just sent my edge to him today without a CAI.

Well.... A friend of a friend was turning in his truck and took off most of his accessories to sell to others. I picked up the Volant cheap, couldnt resist the price.
Except now im scared crapless to put it on. He said he never had a problem running it with his edge, but I guess what you cant see can hurt you.
So i guess im either going to just sell it and continue to use the edge as is, or see if bill will write me a tune so I can use it.

This is a great question. Does anyone know which Evolution PID would be the best one to monitor? Motor runs hotter when it it's lean, so maybe if Cylinder Head Temp was over xxx degrees, we should worry?

Don’t sweat it custom tuning can compensate for all that and get the AF/ ratio right on. The Volant might not be the absolute best says some, but the difference is minuscule, ya know

What about trading it in on Bill's Gryphon and getting custom tunes?

X2 on this Thumper!

Does it EVER make sense to scrap what is fundamentally a good piece of equipment that can be modified to be a "great" device, just to try something new? (At great expense too?)

I keep saying, "Talk to Bill"! If you don't like what you hear, vote with your feet! Run, not walk, to one of the others in the "Big Three"! From everything I've learned here, you're going to be happy with your choice.

But, I'm betting you won't run!
