Pros and Cons of adding Troyer Tunes???
Pros and Cons of adding Troyer Tunes???
I have been playing around since I put the 35's on the truck to go with a tuner, or just leave it alone, or what to do.
I will probably go with custom Troyer Tunes but I want to know exactly what everyone thinks about them (both positive and negative). Please also feel free to add anything that you think would be useful as well. Thanks.
1. How does the tuned truck compare to stock and what level are you using most of the time?
2. How is the shifting compared to stock and can that be adjusted without re-tuning?
3. What was the cost with the forum discount?
4. Any issues with reliability after some time?
5. Any improvement or decrease of gas mileage after adding the tuner and which level seems to net the best results? (I understand that when you first get the tunes your foot gets heavy to test it)
6. What all is asked for on the data-log sheets for Troyer?
7. What changes can you make manually (tire size, shift firmness, etc....)?
8. Is it still worth the investment after you have had it for a while or does the "WOW" factor dissappear?
9. How quickly does Mike fix any initial "issues" that may occur with the tuner? (And what, if any, did any of you have)
10. Finally, would you buy Troyer Tunes for your next Ford Truck or try something else?
Thank you again for all the help.

from what i hear mike is like a god to the f150's.
no pun intended. and i personally dont have any tunes on my truck but i hear all pro's no cons. better fuel mixter since the trucks run lean and mods increase that. plust the tranny shifts. he also adjust things like idle in drive/park.
if you asked me i would go with troyer tunes. hey anything good is worth waiting for

he is the only one i would let tune any of my fords-2 vehicles tuned from him since '04,over 100k PROBLEM FREE miles-i'd personally call troyer if i were you and have a talk with him -then after a discussion make my choice- you won't be dissapointed-phil
I'm three weeks into my wait. I'm in no hurry though. I have things that need to be done before I receive the tunes anyway. The only complaint I've heard is that of harsh shifting. If that's a problem than you can always have that adjusted to your desired level.
hi,
Troyer tunes are great, and yes the only hard part with his tune is waiting for them. I used his tunes on my first truck, loved it. Went with VMP for my second truck because i didnt want to wait as long. I feel like the VMP tunes are just as great, but i actually LIKED the harsher shifting from the troyer tunes.
As far as reliability i think the tunes keep the truck the same as if there were no tunes. Mike said in the worksheets as long as you keep your truck maintained the proper way, you'll be more than fine.
From both tuners, i dont think the wow factor has ever left, when your normally driving you dont notice a difference after a while - BUT if you do get on heavy on the gas for a quick pass, you get reminded instantly of what you paid for.
Mike dealing with problems with the XCAL2 and my truck were never a problem. In my truck the tunes made the O/D light flash on and off for a while. I called the shop and discussed the problem, mike said he was familiar with the problem, said it was rare but sent me a new set of tunes - and the problem was fixed!! (got the tunes in like 1 or 2 days via email) In the same respect, Justin at VMP is equally as good at answering questions and i would assume at fixing problems. (Haven't had any with VMP)
Just a question for you ameration,
are you looking to regain the power you felt like you lost from putting the bigger tires on? If so, the custom tunes help, but for me they were not enough. I had the 4.6 V8 in my 97 F150 and when i went from stock tires to 285/70/17's, i craved more power. ordered troyer tunes assuming they would be the fix i needed. After some time i decided I needed more "umph". re-gearing the truck after my tire purchase was the greatest thing ever!!! Made the truck feel great and combine with the custom tunes - WOW. Just something for you to think about since you've got 35's now.
good luck hope this helps you out a little

So many go on and on about how great they are and I figure if I am going to pay the dealership to recalibrate the speedo, why not spend the extra and get other improvements from a tuner also (which I am hoping to find out exactly what those will be with this thread).
I had experience in the past with tuning my Mustang GT but that is a completely different story as it is not a 6k lb. truck, so I want to know what to realistically expect for the truck. I know it is not a sports car and it never will come anywhere close to what you can get from a Mustang, I just want to know what to expect.
Thanks again.
One thing to think about though. The tunes from Mike will be safe for your truck, as SOME tuners will not take that into consideration and only try to make it fast. Then when something happens to your motor, all you are gonna hear is that it wasn't their tune that caused it. I know this from personal experience, believe me. I am sure Mike could have made more horsepower with my motor if he wanted to, but I am sure with all the money I spent on it, he made the tune safe so I could enjoy it without any problems. I can take someone for a spin in my truck, and if I ask them to guess the horsepower it has, they are usually way off from what his dyno said it was.

Go with a custom tuned Xcal2.

I have never had Troyer tunes but have used VMP for custom tunes on two vehicles so I'll answer those questions based on that.
1. How does the tuned truck compare to stock and what level are you using most of the time?
There is going to be a big difference, especially in the shifting department. Any tuner can make the shifts how you want, IE: Harsh, Firm, Soft, etc. I always ran a 93 oct tune.
2. How is the shifting compared to stock and can that be adjusted without re-tuning?
Shifting is MUCH better than stock. The actual tuner can adjust the tune to compensate for a difference in shifting.
3. What was the cost with the forum discount?
Contact Justin at www.VMPTUNING.com for that kind of information or Troyer Performance.
4. Any issues with reliability after some time?
Nope, I had 22,000 hard miles split between a Edge and a custom tuned Xcal2 from Justin at VMP Tuning.
5. Any improvement or decrease of gas mileage after adding the tuner and which level seems to net the best results? (I understand that when you first get the tunes your foot gets heavy to test it)
93 octane is going to give you the best mileage.
6. What all is asked for on the data-log sheets for Troyer?
7. What changes can you make manually (tire size, shift firmness, etc....)?
Tire size, gear ratio, etc.
8. Is it still worth the investment after you have had it for a while or does the "WOW" factor dissappear?
It's going to be worth it especially because if you get a new vehicle, you'll be able to get new tunes and you're done.
9. How quickly does Mike fix any initial "issues" that may occur with the tuner? (And what, if any, did any of you have)
I'm not sure about Mike, but Justin will be able to fix a problem within hours or within days. It just depends on what's going on with any particular tuner.
10. Finally, would you buy Troyer Tunes for your next Ford Truck or try something else?
I've used Justin at VMP Tuning with great results, fast service, a great product, etc. so I don't see the need to try anything else.

1. How does the tuned truck compare to stock and what level are you using most of the time? Feels like an entirely different truck! Throttle lag is gone, more power throughout the RPM range, I run Troyers 93 octane performance tune
2. How is the shifting compared to stock and can that be adjusted without re-tuning? Shifts are much smoother, and with Troyer tunes the harder you're on the gas, the harder it will shift. You can request soft, firm or hard shifts, iirc.
3. What was the cost with the forum discount?
Per the terms of service of this website, those types of things cannot be discussed on the boards, call Troyer to find out.
4. Any issues with reliability after some time?
Been running mine for 15k+ and no issues.
5. Any improvement or decrease of gas mileage after adding the tuner and which level seems to net the best results? (I understand that when you first get the tunes your foot gets heavy to test it)
I didn't really see a change in MPG with the tunes. But I usually drive fairly hard and almost entirely city driving, so I wouldn't expect much of a change. I did lose about 1+ MPG when I added my bigger wheels and tires though.
6. What all is asked for on the data-log sheets for Troyer?
When you first order you fill out several pages worth of data for your truck. Everything from Year and engine size to maintenance and fuel habits. After you get the tune installed you data-log with the Xcal2 (or 3) or a laptop computer. You'll record various parameters such as RPM, Spark, open loop vs closed loop, among many others. Once you send in that data to Troyer he can analyze it and make any adjustments as needed.
7. What changes can you make manually (tire size, shift firmness, etc....)?
Tire size and gear ratio are only two I've looked at. There could be more options but I just don't know.
8. Is it still worth the investment after you have had it for a while or does the "WOW" factor dissappear?
Definitely still worth it. I enjoy the tune so much that I don't even care about the cost for 93 octane.
9. How quickly does Mike fix any initial "issues" that may occur with the tuner? (And what, if any, did any of you have)
My initial tune caused the engine to run rich at WOT (I did my datalogging at a dyno shop that could record the A/F ratios). After sending the data on 9/13/06 (a Wednesday) to Mike I had my newly revised 93 octane tune on 9/21/09 (Thursday of the next week). I retested my truck at the dyno and everything was spot on!
10. Finally, would you buy Troyer Tunes for your next Ford Truck or try something else?
Yes, absolutely. No question about it. When it comes time for me to get a supercharger Mike will be doing that for me as well.
Thank you again for all the help.

Custom Tunes from Troyer was the best mod i did to my truck. It makes a whole world of difference.
I love the shifting, it shifts progressively firmer as you get deeper into the throttle.
I get best mileage on my premium gas tune, not to mention the most power as well.
No reliability issues, runs better than both the Edge and stock.
I would call Mike and have a chat with him about all of this.
