Question for those of you with Troyer Tunes!

Hey all,

I was curious? To those of you with Troyer tunes, what do you run primarily? 87 Performance, 93 Performance? Other? I am mainly interested in what you are running on a daily basis. Also, how often do you switch tunes? When I had my Edge, I only ran Level 2. Now that I have a Troyer X Cal III on order, I'm just wondering what the best tune to run a a daily basis would be?

One last question? Do you know if it's safe to run any additives with a Troyer tune? I've always put in a can of BG 44K every 7500 miles. I just don't know if this would cause any harm with a custom tune or not?

You never tried lvl 3. I mainly used lvl2 in my Edge but every now and then I upped it the lvl 3 for a few weeks. 3 is so much better. I plan on doing the same thing with the Troyer tune.

i usually run 93 performance most of the time-i refuse to pay $3.50 a gallon for 93 octane,i am back to 87 performance now-@ $100 a fillup at least twice a week i have run amsoil pi fuel additive once every 5 k miles since new- zero problems!i keep the fuel filter changed every 15 k miles for piece of mind and frt o2 sensors every 30k miles-the last 2 times i changed them they had zero deposits on em-actually since new other than a cold start idle issue[under 20 degrees] that was taken care of immediately]-i have had zero problems with my tunes-hope this helps-phil

93 Tow all the time.

Speaking of mileage, I was ok with mine before compared to what I've heard other lifted 35 trucks getting but after adding the e-fans, pulleys and hitting Mike's dyno I'm starting to see the first noticeable mpg improvement yet. Gonna run a few tank fulls before totally believing it but I'm about to see the fuel light pop on and I'm averaging 15.0 this tank according to the dash which usually reads about 13.5-13.8 or so (I think it's about .5 or so optimistic all the time compared to hand calcs). I may have picked up a mpg........would be nice. Next week comes the X and true dual which should help as well.

I have always used the 93 max or 93 tow before the blower and at one point I was changing tunes 2 times a week at times when I was towing the boat, If you have the 93 tune use it, it will give you the best mileage and performance, I can get 20mpg on the hwy (55-60 mph) unless its super cold then it drops to 18ish. so it might cost you a few bucks more to fill up to me its worth it

This is the route that I'm kinda leaning towards when I get my tunes even though 93 Octane cost an arm and a leg nowadays! Also, is it safe to run the tow tune if you are "Not" towing? I think I remember hearing that you should not use the towing tune unless you are indeed towing.

hmmmm let me know about the tow tune b/c I've just heard that it's not the absolute most efficient. It would seem to me to be the fine otherwise and I really don't want to flash every other day.

As it turned out, I’ve only been running the 93 performance. I tried the 87 performance and the 93 tow just to make sure they work but the 93 performance is da’bomb & the reliability is excellent; never had a glitch.
Gas is expensive; the spread between 87 & 93 is $0.30 so that’s approximately an extra $7. or $8 bucks a fill up

Really appreciate the responses so far! I'd still like to know if it's safe to run the tow tune if you are not towing anything? I'll use the search feature to see if this has been discussed or not, but I don't ever recall anyone saying anything about it?

Hopefully if I'm wrong someone will step in but I think it works like this......
When NOT towing you can run any tune however the non towing max performance tune will give you the absolute most power, firmest shifts, and best efficiency. When towing you MUST use the towing tune as Mike (and I'm guessing other tuners/tunes) back off on some of the parameters making it "conservative" and reducing chance of leaning the engine, running high egt, tranny stress, maybe other stuff but basically doing harm to the truck while towing hard?

Where the heck is MGD fan anyway?

I agree and not sure why you would switch tuners if your not going to use it to the max of its performance? Unless maybe you had a lot of problems with your Edge. Maybe you do a lot of towing so need lvl2, I guess Im just curious what you didnt like about the Edge on lvl2 thats making to change tuners.

Please no bashing me.

I switched to Troyer tunes cause the Edge was causing a lean condition to my truck. Also, the Edge is geared more for a stock truck and my truck when done, will be far from stock! I do not do any towing. I was just curious as to what the parameters of the tow tunes are.

exactley correct- shift points are altered as well as fuel is richened to keep lower egt's while towing-phil
