Would I benefit from a tuner ?

I have a 2007 F150 FX4 with the 5.4 engine. I have a K&N filter and a flowmaster 40 series catback exhaust system. My gas MPG is about 14 for an average and I would love to get a few more out of it as this is all highway miles ! Would I benefit from one of these tuners ? I have been reading through as many threads as I can to try and gain some knowledge but I am a little lost. Thanks guys.

I got a little better mileage out of mine, but not enough to pay for it. Hopwever, I would not want to drive my truck without it. Makes it so much more fun to drive. Plus, if you change tire sizes, it's needed to adjust the speedo.

anything that makes the engine run better will increase gas mileage, but i dont know if it will be enough to offset the cost. plus its hard to keep your foot off the pedal with a tuner installed

The one thing that gained me some MPG was the Borla cat-back... I picked up 1.8 mpg highway immediately.. Put on a 3" AF1 intake after that and it doesn't seem to make much if any difference in mileage.

Your flowmaster isn't a straight-through design, unlike Borla, Magnaflow, some others.. I bet your mileage would increase with one of those.

With the Hypertech Max Energy you'll pick up an extra 25 HP and 40 TQ using the preimieum fuel tune. Or if you would like to use the regular fuel you will still see gains of 16 HP and 28 TQ over stock Here is a link to the Dyno chart for an 07 Dyno Chart Link

A dyno chart from the company that is selling the item.. Thats not biased at all. It's not hard to make a dyno lie.

Thumper,

We have two AWD Superflo load bearing dynos that we use for the development and testing of our tunes, and it has been our experience that when we test a Hypertech tune on a Dyno Jet the numbers are usually 10% higher. If you or anyone else buys a Hypertech Max Energy and you don't see the performance gain that was promised you have 30 days to take advantage of our no questions asked 30 day money back guarantee.

In short we don’t manipulate the dynos to get certain numbers, to quote one of the engineers here “Dynos are an analytical tool, not an advertising tool.”

To the OP a custom tune is worth getting next.I have had a Edge tuner and a custom tune and the custom is the way to go IMO.The custom is basically the same price and it is tuned for your specific vehicleFor the improved shifts it's worth buying it!!
Gas mileage generally increases with a tuner..I am not sure on mine as i put 35 inch tires on mine a week after i got my tuner.Gas mileage is has now gone to chit

Yes I work for Hypertech, that is why I said "we" in my other post. I'm excited about our tuning for the 04+ F-150s and would be intrested in finding someone on here to just test it out and give an honest opinion on it.

Ahhh. I see.

This explains your posts, then.

I would appear that you will have your work cut out for you, as independent ( non-vendor sponsored or executed) testing has shown you are somewhat behid the curve vis-a-vis your competitors --> https://www.f150online.com/forums/sh...03&postcount=5.

Certainly, you do not have the same degree of 'mind-share' evident of SCT, for example.

I'm to understand that you folks are taking steps to close this gap? Because competition is always good

With regard to your testing request - would it not be best for you to solicit the involvement of a well-reputed independent perf shop like Troyer Performance to do you evaluations?

Unlike *most* of us, they are well-equipped to do an objective comparison, having a complete suite of required resources, equipment and vast experience on the F150 platform.

Asking an end-user for some seat-of-the-pants evaluation is a waste of time, and rather pointless, IMHO.

Good luck and I do sincerely wish you well.

MGDfan,

While I appericiate your suggestions, I must say that I don't completely agree. You linked to a post made by SuperchipsDistributor that contained a negative comment about Hypertech's tuning, but what that post didnt contain was anything to back that statement up.

I know Mike Troyer and Troyer Performance are well respected on this board and it is not my intention to try to take anything away from them, but I must say that since they are a dealer for both SCT and Edge (from what I've seen on their site) I don't consider them to be indepented or un-biased.

However I belive that most end-users make excellent indepented and un-biased reviewers because they have nothing to gain and often will be the first to tell you if a product doesn't perform as advertised. We have a whole engineering build full of experts that won't let a product leave here until they think it's the best. But at the end of the day if the end-user isn't happy with the product it doesn't matter how many experts say its the best.

That being said, all Hypertech tunes are independently tested when certified for CARB emissions standards. Part of that certification process is a power verification that ensures that our power gains are within 5% of our claims. This power verification was adopted recently to prevent false advertisements of power gains.

Again thank you for your suggestions and if you don't mind I'd like to send you a PM.

PS I had my name changed to avoid any further confusion
