Best upgrades for 04 f150 4.6l

I have an 04 F150 supercab with 4.6l. In short, its a pig. I have been thinking about a chip, air intake and exhaust but really question how much it'll do? I am looking for some more torque/towing power. Any suggestions?

Thanks

An engine transplant!

I think most will recommend a tuner, intake kit, cat-back, and taller gears.

maybe you should stop answering and let someone who has used this stuff give a try. Or maybe if you even had a 4.6! I am looking for someone who has a certain combination that produced something worthwhile, otherwise its gonna be time for brand X

A tuner by far made the most difference for me. I have an EDGE tuner and am pretty happy w/ it. The XCAL 2 is another popular choice on this site and most people that have it give rave reviews about it. I akso have a AF1 CAI and it helped a bit from about 2500RPM's and up, and exhaust did next to nothing for me except make the truck sound better.

I heard about the edge. Are you using an intake kit?

Though my truck is a bit older......

I have the edge and i love it. But if i was to do it all over i would go with the Xcal2 becuase the edge can only handle so many upgrades. Then its out of its realm to work with. But if you only plan on doing intake exhast and tuner it might be something to consider. I have all three nad just like above. THe tuner was the best. followed by the CAI and then the exhast.

Best bang for the buck is goign to be a tuner. But if your towing/hualing a lot then you might want taller gears. What do you have now?? 3.55's ??

Yes, I have the Air Foce 1 CAI on my truck. It helps a bit in RPM's over 2500. The tuner made a bigger difference though.

The wheels are 20' AE 026's and the tires are Pirelli 275/55/20's. I like these tires better than the Good Year 285/50/20's I use to have.

Yes. 3:55's I was considering going to 3:73's but its too much work in the front end. The rear is easy.

I also have the 3.55's. Kinda suck. If you have the time and money 4.10's would do a ton of help a lot of people tell me. Thats the next thing i want to do.

If the rear is easy what the hell is so hard about the front???? Assuming you have a dial indicator and know what backlash is. You are going to get the best bang for your buck with a programmer. Second should be gears, I dont care what anyone says exhaust and intake are nothing compared to gears. What are you doing with the truck???

THe front (4wd stuff) is a pita. The rear is basically a cover and the axles. THe truck is kinda dead, I tow a 23 ft boat and it does ok but kinda lazy and I have a 23' enclosed car trailer. Again, nothing huge but I'd like it to do better. I agree that for the most part intake and exhaust are a waste, that why I was curious about real experiences. THe suspension in the truck is great, it doesn't sway or sag. Shoulda got the 5.4. MY dads truck is a GMC with the 5.3 and its worlds more powerful.
