1715 Tuner back and forth

I have the superchips 1715 installed in my 2005 Lariat and lately I have found myself switching back and forth from the towing tune to the performance tune a lot. I must have done it 6 times this week alone. I need the towing tune for my Haulmark toy hauler. I have probably done it 30 or 40 times total including the odd one back to stock.

Now I know computers can handle lots of changes but could there be any long term effects or dangers from switching so much?

I don't know the answer to your question but I was wondering what you think of the 1715. Is it worth the money? I tow a 25 ft travel trailer and want better shifting. Does it help the shifting?

Your PCM can be flashed thousands of times before it starts to encounter problems. Think of your PCM more like flash memory than a hard drive. It's designed for this type of stuff.

Theoretically, you should be able to switch tunes back and forth limitless

There was a thread on this awhile back. Do a search in this forum. I think Mike replied to it.

Here it is: https://www.f150online.com/forums/sh...nging+programs

If you are constantly changing the program quite a few times a week. Are you really giving the adaptive strategy a chance to let the program reach it's full potential in the truck?

No problem. I don't castigate people for not using the search function. Unlike some people we know

Hi Feel the Thunder,

First - excuse me if I'm wrong, but from looking in what is listed in your signature, which is a 2005 F-150, the 1715 cannot possibly be used on any 2005 F-150 - it is for 1996-2003 F-150's *only*. The 2004's need to use the 1714, and then the 2005 F-150's would use the 1745. So perhaps you are just confused on your part#, as the 1715 would never allow you to do anything on your truck, it cannot even work with that style of computer at all.

Now that is, of course, if you opt for a simple off-the-shelf tune, instead of getting the significantly larger power gains of our custom tuning.

To get to the actual point of your question - no, it is not a good idea to flash a PCM 6 times a week, or dozens of times a month - that would be hundreds of times a year! While there is no set hard limit, this is not something that anyone should be changing numerous times every week like that.

What you should do if you need to tow frequently is to simply leave it in a towing-compatible tune - we simply do not advise flashing the PCM many times like that, nor are there any circumstances where that actually *has* to be done. The towing tunes you can use all the time, you do not need to be towing to use a towing-compatible tune.

What I tell people is to try to treat your vehicle's PCM like the BIOS chip of your PC's mainboard - don't change it unless you actually need to.

I hope that info helps you a bit, & good luck!

Thanks for all the info, and yes it is a 1745.

Budman1962, the difference is night and day, that is why I keep switching. I cannot handle the towing tune when I am not towing anything. Both the towing tune and performance tune are great and shifting is way better. If you want even more you can get the custom tunes like mentioned in this post by Superchips_Distributor
