Micro vs Xcal
What is the difference for my 2000 5.4L V8? Reading on troyerperformance.com i can't really spot it. they both perform the same functions.

Searchin' helps

The "9100 Custom Tuning Micro Tuner" is still listed - for your year truck it will provide the same tuning as the Xcal/Xcal2. The Xcal2 is the most capable.
The 17xx Microtuners are not able to provide the same gains... as discussed in the link above...

this thread doesn't tell me the difference
you know it's great that you want people to use the search, but if people stop posting and only search it's not a forum, but a FAQ. It's rediculous how many times i see... "use the search, need me to wipe ya too!" I've been coming here since 2001 (under a username that i became locked out of) and keep see this repeating itself. To tell people not to post questions and only search you cannot call this a forum much longer.
a perfect example is this post from you MGD
You finally answered this definetively, a search wouldn't have really yeilded for this question. Now this is exact question is searchable... through hundreds and hundred of other responses. The F150online repository is extremely large. Now it's easier to just ask the question.
finished with my ranting

Hello there, ranting;
BTW, in point of fact, the info in that link you referred to was almost all derived from MY time spent Searching. So, you seem to really want to be spoon fed, after all.
Ready to grow up yet?
When you are, rephrase your question into a more specific one, and I will do my best to answer it, while trying to ignore your rudeness.
Otherwise, simply call Mike Troyer.
Cheers

Troy, l'll try to help best I can. And this is what I get from "searches" going back as far as I can stay awake.
The 1715 comes with these three, and only these, tunes........
1-Super preformance for 91+ octane
2-Towing performance for 91+ octane
3-Towing performance for 87 octane
Now, you can order the Xcal with these, or three other, different, yet specific tunes.
However, my guess, belief, thought, assumption, or whatever you want to call it is....if you order the Xcal with the three exact tunes as off the Micro, they will be the same. Now, before I get thrown in the fire for saying that, let me say that I have NOT read ANY definitive proof to prove otherwise. Yes, someone will say the gains are this or that % greater, but I've not seen any graph or chart to layout the specific differences between the two, of the same tunes, on the same truck.
Are the 93 specific tunes different from the 91+ tunes on the Micro? Still, no definite proof to say otherwise. Except the standard, yes it's this percentage greater. 20% does sound better then saying 2hp, eh?
You can do like Vic suggests, and "search", but if you do and find anything worthwhile thats shows some definite differences with the same tunes in the same vehicle, please, please come back and throw me a link. I can't find it, myself.
Please, don't any of you take this as some sort of put down on either product or any one involved with the two. It ain't. I got no beef with anyone here.
I just can't find suffiecent proof, FOR ME, that takes me beyond reasonable doubt on this particular subject.

getting a little carried away aren't you?
If you don't want to answer, then don't. I'm in the IT industry and subscribe to three different forums. I have yet to tell someone to search for the answer. If that were the case we would create a "Frequently Asked Questions" list. I'm only trying to make an informed decision and haven't seen proof that the 9400 is better than the 9100 for my 2v 5.4. I posted for over a month about my exhaust before deciding on magnaflow SIDO, and everyone answered my posts without hesitation with their recomendations.
As to my rudeness
, they were statements and you're interpreting my tone as you want too. It wasn't meant to be rude. I am sorry i bothered you with my question... it's odd that your mouse goes straight to the reply button (yes this is rude) It is ashame that you couldn't just say hey, the 9400 does this and the 9100 doesn't. I'm not even sure why it bothered you so much, and heck I'm sorry it made you mad. That has never been my intent since i've been on here. If you lived in TN i'd offer you a
jward: thanks for the info, i'm not sure either.

Hi Troy,
Let me see if I can help:
In the case of a 2000 F-150, there would be no difference in the HP gains or performance of the vehicle between using our Troyer Performance custom tuning whether it was loaded into the 9100, or the 9400 - that would be the same, the only difference is the hardware itself.
Now in the hardware there are HUGE differences in capabilities - (many of the XCalibrator 2's capabilities can easily be seen on our web site) it has things like high speed datalogging, much more thorough and better diagnostic capability, the ability to be updated via an Internet download for it's firmware, as well as the ability to work on all the newest vehicles that the 9100 will never be able to work on - such as the 2004 & newer F-150, 2005 & newer Mustang, the 6.0 Powerstroke diesels, and many other new FoMoCo vehicles. Most people are concerned with the future when they buy a device like that, so they like to know that they can have the unit reprogrammed for their next new vehicle when they trade in their 2000 F-150 on say, a 2006 F-150, just for example. The 9100 can't do that, it is limited to being used on FoMoCo vehicles from 1996 thru 2004 that use the EEC-V PCM. Many 2004, and virtually all 2005 & newer FoMoCo vehicles no longer use that PCM, they have much newer technology (using PowerPC-based PCM's) that is required by the government starting in 2007, called "CAN" - Controller Area Network. The 9400 is capable of being used on CAN vehicles, where the 9100 is not.
So - today, I would say that if you do not care about datalogging, if you do not care about diagnostics, and if you do not care about the future or the modular capabilities of the 9400, then you can get the same performance gains by using the 9100 on your 2000 F-150! And we'll be happy to provide that to you, it makes no difference to us, all we care about is seeing YOU happy, of course.
If *I* were buying the unit, hands down it would be the 9400, as I care about having diagnostic capabilities that include all the manufacturer-specific ENHANCED parameters, and not just the few generic OBD-II PID's - I care about being able to datalog - plugging the unit in and seeing exactly what the engine, transmission, etc are doing in any area at any time, and recording that data so you can send it back to your tuner for fine-tuning, such as if you make further modifications, or for any of many other reasons. I care about it being Internet-updateable in it's firmware, and having the future built in. Etc., etc.
But that's just me - and you may very well feel differently - you may well keep your 2000 F-150 for years to come, and even then when you do get your next vehicle, it may be another vehicle up thru say, 2004 or so that uses the same basic EEC-V PCM that your present vehicle uses, so that the 9100 could be unlocked and reprogrammed for use on that next vehicle!
That is something only you can decide, really.
As I understand it, your question was what is the basic difference between using the 9100 or the 9400 for your vehicle, with either unit being loaded with our Troyer Performance custom tuning - I hope I've understood that correctly, and if so, then this info should prove helpful.
If you'd like to go over any of this in further detail, please feel free to call us at our number below & we'll be happy to go over any questions you may have.
Thanks for your post, I hope this eases some of your frustrations in trying to get the info you want, my thanks to others who have also tried to help & I hope you all enjoy your Labor Day weekend!

Hi JerseyGeorge,
Good to "see" you again - watch out, now someone will be searching all your posts to check for just 1 question and get a "dig" in!!
All kidding aside, I agree in that with as many times as we discuss so many of the same things over and over at this busy web site (which is only natural with as many new people as we get here every week), the SEARCH feature does give you the ability to access just about anything you'd want to know.
But it's human nature to type first, and look for a SEARCH feature last - many times people don't even realize it's here. I also think for a lot of people they don't like taking the time to really master the SEARCH features' filters so that they can instantly access all the great info here - heck, it even took me awhile to do it, but it really didn't take that long, and once I did, I was able to look up anything ever posted, if memory serves.
To each their own - heck, I say lets' just all get along, which is basically what you said.
