Superchips 1715 with 4.6
jward,
Think of "custom" and "stock" tune this way: At your wedding, would you prefer a suit, off the rack from JC Penney (stock; 1715), or a hand-made, tailored suit from Johnson Bros., Hong Kong that fits you like a glove (xcal)?
Mike Troyer will make a suit that fits YOU! Ask him about the hp increases of the xcal over the 1715!

cliles55, that's a bad comparison, bro. I'd take the Penny suit everytime.
So let me ask this of you guys that have the Xcal, when you called Troyer, what kind of questions did they ask you and what kind of perfomance enhancements did you request from them?
Would just like to get a feel of how that Johnson Bro suit would be different from the Pennys.

Come on guys, this can't be top secret stuff.
What questions are asked as to determine the best *custom* tunes to apply to your truck when ordering the Xcal?
And why those tunes would be that much better than the standard 1715 tunes on the Microtuner.
Stock '03 5.4 2V FX4.
Thanks.

TP’s custom tunes in the XCal net you 50% more hp & torque over and above the 1715. In addition, shift point are more precise, goes open loop instantly at WOT and the list goes on and on and on

Does "50% larger power gain" equate to 50% more hp AND 50% more torque?
I've perused all the "50% larger power gain" searches and the vehicles mentioned are not necessarily a "'03 5.4 2V FX4 with 3.73 gears" that I question.
Thanks for the same old "use the search function" answer.
Later.

Gentlemen, please, if I may intrude again
Jward - I know you think it sounds banal, but Searching is still good advice - as is calling TP to get the most definitive answers. He's busy getting a tan right now, but be patient
When I had another look at this ( and remember, as a former 1715 owner I had exactly the same questions you have, but took a different tack answering them), what I found was predominately - " your results will vary".
This is because, unlike any other platform, the F-150 has literally hundreds of different PCM codes, and dozens of different configurations. Some PCM codes are "better" than others and require less in the way of tweaking - hence less potential for improvement - which results in less overall gain, because they were in a better place to begin with. Others are so compromised that the resultant improvements are significant ( I might even say huge - for if a truck could never go open loop stock, this alone is a biggie when fixed ). But they ALL show improvement with tuning - so on average a 50% gain is demonstrable, and more is possible, as is less.
Throw in other variables beyond tuning control ( like gearing, weight, manual vs auto tranny, etc ) - 3.73's may take advantage of any midrange improvements better than say a 3.55 - and the perceived drivetrain performance could indeed become a function of holistics. FX4's are lighter than Lariats; manuals have far less driveline losses than automagics... you get the drift. JP, correct me here if I eff'd this part up, buddy.
While I applaud your determination to find specific answers - (certainly I don't have them for your particular setup, just the feedback of others and my own experiences with my truck) - I fear that, try as we might, I have a feeling that we aren't going to be able to satisfy your curiosity.
Hence, may I suggest a consultation with Mike regarding your situation as the best recourse at this point - since Seaching isn't cutting it for you, nor are our responses to date.
As for your earlier post concerning info gathering, I don't think I'm at liberty to forward you a copy of a blank CPW ( where the tuning and datalogging questions are asked in detail ) - you need to ask TP for that.
Okay ?

Like Girls or Boys?
Do you drive a truck?
Know any farm animals?
Not satisfied with "your equipment"?
No really, they want to know what mods you have done to the truck now or are planning to do. Some mods require custom tuning others don't.
