Victories and Defeats for Neal (Part 3)
to many variables to say one does better than the other (track conditions, sway bars on or off, what kind of tires and as neal has said himself he isnt telling everything that has been done. as good as the chevy head breaths the 13.9 @ 94 dosent sound correct, 97 or 98 seems more like it unless the chevy is laying down at the end (maybe rev limiter) if somthing is happening at the end then the truck may be at 13.6 or 13.7
i think that if neal came up against a chevy with similar mods as his he would have his hands full, not saying you would lose neal, but i dont think it would be one of those "had him by 3 lengths before i shifted to 2nd."

The Chevys must respond to something in the fuel out there in Texas because my very lightly modded Super Cab has walked quite a few of those stock 14 second 5.3's (although 2 of the ones I have fooled around with had a couple bolt ons too; both of them are co-workers one with a FIPK and exhaust, a heavier Z71 though, and the other 4X2 with just exhaust) around here in California... Although we do only have 91 octane fuel out here too... Maybe that is it?
I have not had my truck to the track, because quite frankly the track that I took my Mustang to is about 90 minutes away!
It could be that my truck is a factory freak though...

HI!... Well guys I got my 1ST good race of "2002" tonight!!!!!! I was cruising around at about MIDNIGHT when I came up on this late "80's" MUSTANG GT, 5-SPEED. The MUSTANG GT slowed down and the driver started to flag me down. I just ignored him and cruised on by him. Then he got up on my passenger's side and started revving up and down. The driver then motioned me to roll down my window. I did. Then I realized it was a freind of mine that I hav'nt seen in about 2 years. We slowed down a bit and were chatting while driving. He asked me if I had done any more work to my truck since the last I had seen him. I said, just a few small things. Well "JOE" my buddy, told me he had been working on the STANG quite a bit over the WINTER. It's a "88" MUSTANG GT with most of the simple bolt ons and a 200H.P FOGGER SYSTEM. The bottle was empty tonight. Well to get back to the race. We were right next to eachother doing about 20MPH. He starts "BLURPING" his throttle a bit, so I was getting ready for him to DROP THE HAMMER. Well he did, and so did I!!!!!!! 1ST gear we were side by side. When my truck hit 2ND gear (HARD) I lunged about 4 feet ahead of him. By the top of 2ND gear he caught up to me and was only behing by about 1 foot. I hit 3RD gear and very slowly started to pull on him. I shut it down when I saw the cop cruiser about 500 feet ahead of us. We had got up to about 112MPH!!!!!!!!! Don't worry guys the streets were empty except for the cop car, on a 2 lane open road. I quickly jumped on the brakes and turned on to a side street to the left and "JOE" did the same and turned off to the right. I'm very surprised that the cop did'nt hear us coming up on him!
After going through several side streets I came back to the local hangout. JOE was just pulling in himself. He got out of his MUSTANG and ran over to me yelling " WHAT THE HELL DID YOU DO TO THAT TRUCK?" I just answered " A LITLE HERE A LITTLE THERE, IT ALL ADDS UP YOU KNOW" He admitted he was ***** to the wall and could'nt beat me. I asked him if he had been to the dragstrip lately to get a N/A pass. He said YES and that with slicks he ran a best of 13.69E.T N/A. I was surprised because I know for a fact that my truck IS NOT that fast, so how did I beat him? He was puzzled too. I know my truck has been running better in the last week then it has since I bought it but I know I'm not that fast. He was so bummed that I beat him. We went at it from a roll so tire spin was very minimal. Oh well it was fun as hell to beat him and see the look on his face afterwards!

Hi Neal,
500 ft. is close at those speeds. It is almost 2 football fields, so if you're quick enough, you can shut it down and make tracks elsewhere, as you obviously did. Sounds like you've done this before................
It won't be long now, we'll soon have that truck configured & tuned as it needs and you'll be handing some even faster cars your taillights.
Be careful!!

HI!... The MUSTANG GT had 3.73 gears and the roads here in WINDSOR are clean. We only had snow here 4 times all WINTER and it's been in the 70's for the last 3 weeks. Traction for both vehicles was not a problem.
At the cruise tonight, a 2001 Holley Charged Durango showed up...385 hp. It's the first holley thunder I've seen. We go to chattin and I learned it was a special edition truck from across the river (Hudson River, NY) THe guy, Kyle, tells me he's never been to the track but has done some streetin. Well, I guess ya knows what went on next, but I had to promise not to use the NOS..... after the cruise.... side by side on the highway ramp...(another cool night..good for the KB supercharger) . He's there smoking his tires and i'm GONE!!!!! and kept goin gone! I musta had about 15-20 lengths on him....braked and waited for him to pull aside...he wuz kinda scratchin his head...lol So, I yell over...lets go on a roll....so..... 20 mph.....stomp.... lurch ...chirp.... im GONEEEEE again...pulling away strongly. Let him catch up again....Gave him a smile and a wave and said... Cya next week, Kyle. Gone in 6 seconds....... lol
your na truck beat a 5spd mustang gt with 3.73's and niether vehicle had traction problems? How is that possible?
I have 3.27's and i have traction problems, in first and second. Please what kind of tires did the mustang have?
Hard to believe a pickup na could be a mustang with 3.73's and a 5spd, a lightning yeah, a na 5.4 - on wet or sandy pavement maybe, both with traction = how?

HI!... BLACK F-150 OFFROAD : "HOW"? Very simple, I have more H.P/torque than my buddy does. MIKE T and I figure I'm making about 340H.P at the FLYWHEEL currently. I've also got 4.10 gears and traction bars. My truck hooks very well on a 20 mph roll that this race started at. I don't know why your having a problem beleiving this. I've raced probably about 25 MUSTANGS over the last 3 years with this truck and only lost once. That loss was at the dragstrip. I only lost to a "2001" MUSTANG 5-SPEED by one thousanth of a second. I beat MUSTANGS all thetime, most of them are stock or very mildily modded. The MUSTANG had regular radial street tires like me. Probably around 26 inches tall. Mine are 275/60/R-17's and are just shy of 30 inches tall. I bumped into JOE last night and he still could'nt beleive that my truck beat him. It's driving him crazy! I luv it!
P.S : A buddy of mine had a "90" MUSTANG COBRA with hedders, exhaust, power pulleys, 3.73 gears, and ram air kit and on street tires all he could manage was a 14.03E.T. And YES he drives a manual very well.

Neal, one of these days you gotta write a book on all your secrets to HP. You'd make a fortune. LOL Then you could develop even more mods with the extra cash.
340 estimated horse is great. But at what point do you think internal engine parts should be upgraded to handle this extra power and what would those parts be? Thanks Neal. Keep those kills acomin'.

Hi thewhiteford,
Forgive me for sticking my big nose in here, but I couldn't help it, as we have a lot of customers making big power numbers, so we have some good data on that in addition to what Neal may want to comment on. In answer to your question about how much power can the stock motor take, the non-Lightning 5.4 F-150 motors have nice forged steel crankshafts, so the crank is excellent. The rods are not bad, the pistons are cast of course.
We see about 425 hp as a safe practical maximum for a stock block regular 5.4, though a few are pushing them further, I'd say that's generally a good safe limit that will allow longevity and reliability. You have to keep the revs down in the 5.4 due to it's very long connecting rod (6.75"!!) and stroke; though some take them to 6500 rpm, we don't like to twist the 5.4's more than about 5700 rpm or so, roughly. A 5.4 motor with the typical bolt-ons likes about a 5500-5650 rpm WOT upshift point.
In terms of what parts to upgrade for higher power, the crank is already OK, so you'd want better rods & pistons, basically, and a good balanced setup & assembly of the short block would put you in good shape for standing up to about 600 HP. More than that and you'd want a really serious crank & much more, of course.
Just FYI.................

HI!... MIKE you beat me too it!!!!!LOL! I was just about to say everything you just said but I would think that a stock 5.4 would be able to take close to 500H.P if the rev's are kept at a safe limit. We'll see once I get my 9lb MAGNACHARGER on, EH?
With a few more severe mods I'm hoping to make about 375H.P N/A, and then on to the supercharger.
