Victories and Defeats, Part 4
You are correct. I believe Lok N Load was thinking about the previous Impala SS's, which were basically the Caprice body, with the 'Vette engine in them. I have to admit, I was thinking the same thing when you said you dusted an Impala. I haven't seen any of the New Impala's being used as a police vehicle yet. New York State has the right idea when it comes to Interceptor Vehicles. Alot of the barracks have Camaro SS's with lightbars on top --- Hard to run from that!!!

...however, shoulda gone past 70, and the story changes, up to that &%*!# transmission saving &*#!^%$ speed limiter (I'm not telling how fast the limiter is).
I still don't care whether it's a yugo or a Viper, still can't outrun that radio... and if you do, LOOK UP ... and remember a little birdie told you to...

Oh, good save: the Impala is garbage v-6. Chevy made a serious mistake on that move.

HI!... A INTERESTING STORY! A freind of mine had a "70" HEMI CUDA back in "72". It was dynoed at near 600H.P at the rearwheels. 426CI HEMI massively modified. REDLINE was 7600RPM. He was speeding on I-75 near DETROIT, when a cruiser popped out of somewhere and started to chase him. Well back then everyone kinda ran from the police at one time or another. Well he stomped it and took off. Well we all know that a police cruiser back then was not going to catch him at all. So about 10 miles down the road, far away from the cruiser, my buddy noticed a police helicopter was right above his car like 50 feet. He said "what the hell" and went throught the gears. Remember back then that the helicopters of that day only went about 150-160MPH. He said that he buried the factory speedo at the top of 3RD gear. He actually started to pull on the HELICOPTER. To make a long story short, he got away from the copter and was never caught. Still till this day he says he would never do that again, it scared the crap out of him. You can beleive me or not but the cars was documented at going over 180MPH for it's top speed later on. Man I wish I could of seen the the pilot's face when the CUDE started pulling away from him when the helicopter was at full throttle. AH! The good old days!LOL! TRUE STORY.

My patrol vehichle is a 1995 Chevy Capri with the LT1 corvette motor in it. I think it is rated at 375 hp. I believe 1995 was the only year they put the LT1 engine in the Capri. That car is so fast it scares me. It handles like sh*t compared to the crown vic. I've had it up to a 153 mph once. I was going to an armed robbery about 20 miles away. I got up on I-10 and flew. They are very fast cars. I have not lost a chase yet. We are the only agency in AZ that can still chase for only Traffic violations. The other agency can only do it for a criminal violation. Neatless to say we chase a lot. Take care guys, and be safe.

I beg to differ on that
Ive driven the Caprice with an Lt1, and yes, it was a 94' model and it handled soo good compared to the Crown vic, and god was it fast! After the local department switched to Crown vics, they felt like they got downgraded to V6's! BTW, the Lt1 in the caprice packed 260hp.

I think the "liability management" is getting way out of hand. 'Course now we don't chase, we follow.

OK guys, let's not get carried away......
First, even the 9C1 Caprice with the LT1 *never* had any Corvette engine in them, though that is a very common mistake and assumption, very common indeed.
Corvette LT1's are far different from the LT1 in the F-body Camaro's & Firebirds, and the iron-head version in the Caprice & Impala. The Corvette LT1, from 1992-1996, had 300 horsepower, was all-aluminum from heads to block, and was the *only* second-generation LT1 to have true 4-bolt mains. (Yep, I've owned a bunch of them) What the Caprice & Impala LT1's actually had was the iron-head lowest-horsepower version of the second-generation LT1 ever built, which was rated SAE Net at 260 hp. That was certainly enough to grunt out low 8-second 0-60 times, and accelerate like Hell from 70-80 mph on up to about 130 or so. But a Corvette motor it never was, nor could a Corvette motor ever be had from the factory in those 90's police package (9C1) Impala's, etc. The highest power output in the LT1 Caprice & Impala was 260 horsepower, they never had any higher power options, so there was never a 275, 300, and certainly nothing like a 375 horsepower LT1 ever available in any Caprice or Impala police cruiser or not. Sorry to rain on anyone's parade here.
The Crown Vic 4.6 Police package is pretty weak, and has a 124 mph top speed limiter from the factory, though we've seen a few with 112 mph limiters, not often though. We have removed those limiters in many of those Crown Vics and many of the Caprice & Impala police cruisers had 130 mph top speed limiters! They did that so that municipalities wouldn't have to spend big $$$ on replacement tires, and I can't tell you how many good troopers that made mad as all get out! I am of the firm belief that law enforcement should have the very fastest & most powerful, best handling vehicles made by the respective automakers each model year, they need all the help they can get to do what is sometimes a terrible job.
And that is completely correct, the only way you're going to outrun a Motorola is if there isn't anyone home on the other end to answer the radio!
I hope that info helps to dispell some myths & rumors, etc., without raining on anyone's parade, so to speak.
Just one last point, though everyone already knows this I'm sure, NEVER TRY TO OUTRUN LAW ENFORCEMENT! If you're getting pulled over, no matter what it's for, immediatley stop as instructed, shut up, be nice, & turn on your interior lights so they can immediately see you're no threat to them!

Hey murfster. I work for The Pima County Sheriffs Dept. Is your brother J Murphy? I remember him leaving in January For Colorado Springs. We both worked in the Foothills Division on Mid shift. If thats him, damn is it a small world! His radio unit was #602. He is a good cop. I hope he is doing well. A Pinal County Sheriffs Deputy was killed Friday night out here. He was shot in the neck. Pinal is the next county up from Pima. Anyhow my best wishes to him.
Now back to the 375 hp thing. I said " I think it is rated at 375 hp" Don't bite my head off guys. It was an honest mistake. By saying "I think" That means I am not sure. However many HP that car has, I can tell you it is fast. Take care guys.

My condolences to the Pinal County deputy's family, that really sux! Hope the got the bastard.
Yup, small world!
RE: 375HP, yea, I don't think anyone bit your head off, but it seemed strange that Chebby was doing 375 in anything other than Z06 (385??). No biggie, mistakes happen. I wish Ford would step up to the plate with a 300+HP Crown Vic without that ^&**$#@ limiter though!

Yep you might have meet me. Although I am not a SWAT guy. That stuff is just to high speed for me. I heard rumors that Ford was going to the 302 in the new crown vics. I don't know when. We just got 80 new patrol cars. We have 45 more on the way. Thats not including all the Dodge Durangos and motorcycles we are getting. The Sheriff is going to retire soon. I guess he decided to break the county before he goes...lol. The Crown vics are pretty quick. Maybe I could talk the Sheriff into putting Superchips in them...yeah right. He is an oldtimer, he probably doesn't know what a computer chip is. Man I hope he is not F-150 ownwer on this site. I would get my butt chewed off...lol

Hi Tucson Truck,
That was me, and I didn't mean to give the impression of "biting your head off" or anything, please forgive me if my post sounded that way, as that really wasn't my intention at all. I tried to make it clear that I didn't intend rain on anyone's parade, just let people know what the reality was.
It's a very common mistake, for example, to think that the Corvette motor was in those Impala/Caprice 9C1 packages, as they were all designated exactly the same by GM, as "the" LT1, making it a perfectly natural mistake to make because of not having any different designation for the various versions of the LT1, that's GM's fault. It's also a common mistake to think they were rated at higher than what they were, you're not the only one to think that, not by a long shot!
I've owned numerous examples of those vehicles, and of course we tune all of them, so we know which body got which LT1 motor version, so I thought it would be good info to have available.
Again, my apologies if my response came off stronger than intended, Tucson Truck, & be safe on the job out there!
P.S. If your department (or any other) would ever care to do a no-cost evaluation of the Superchip for those Crown Vics, give us a shout & we can easily accommodate that, if you think it might ever be appropriate. Not trying to sell, just letting you know that is do-able, as many times law enforcement agencies like to be able to do that kind of thing to familiarize them with various products without expenditure.
