Post moving to 4.10 gears... whats my max speed?

I've got 3.55 gears now, and i'm upgrading to 4.10 with limited-slip. even tho i have a superchip, mike cannot remove the top speed limiter so i'm still stuck at 96mph. so my question is: if i move to 4.10 gears what would my new top speed be???...80mph???

Hi Talleywhacker,

Changing to 4.10 gears can lower that top speed limiter even more, as the speedometer is off; this doesn't automatically happen all the time every time, but it is a possibility.

You'll need to have your speedometer recalibrated for the 4.10 gears so you don't have that problem.

If you like, touch base with me either on the phone or in email, to remind me of who you are (I can never remember with the screen names we all use here!) and your computer code, etc. and we can check that all out to see if we can do that for you, so you'll know before you make any such change.

Mike,

Would it be possible to recalibrate the speed dependant shift caracteristics of the auto transmission?

HI JMC,

Well, there you're talking about *part-throttle* shift points, which are determined by sophisticated algorithms based on throttle position & load versus vehicle speed, and they actually work pretty well.

To answer your question, yes, we *can*, but very rarely do. That is only done in custom programs, if there is an actual deficit, as in the case of say, really big tires & gear ratio changes, etc.

Those part-throttle upshift points are based on "sliding scales", in other words, they aren't at a set mph, but instead, there is an mph *range* that they can happen within, and it takes some carefully detailed work to change those and get a positive improvement without ever running into a situation where the vehicle stays in a gear for an inappropriate amount of time.

So yes, it *can* be done, but it's not often done, only in custom programs.

The factory program is set up so that the ECU is going to command an upshift on light throttle as soon as it determines it can upshift without actually causing the vehicle to lose velocity.

Neal... Your humor is welcomed ???

But I am still 96mph govorned even with the chip... i just thought that my top speed would drop even lower because of moving to 4.10's. I seen a couple of v6 mustang guys talking about how their top speed went from 115 to 95 by switching to 4.10's(i know they start out at 3.23) so it should drop mine that much but it would suck to have a max speed of 88mph!

take my gears for instance:

3.8 / 4.10 = .75

this means that if I switch to 4.10 gears my driveshaft has to turn 25% or 1/4th faster to maintain the same speed. if my truch now goes 80 at 5000 rpm then in order to go 80 with 4.10 gears i'll have to turn 6250 rpm.

THANKS Bill Bateman!!!

so would this be correct:

3.55 / 4.10 = .86

so i cruise 70mph at 2100rpm so a 14% increase in rotation would put me at a cruise of 70mph with 4.10's at 2394mph???

you got it bud. them big gears are made for pulling/putting torque to the ground. they are not for cruising. in my instance, traveling 125,000 miles with 4.10 gears has the same effect on my engine as traveling 100,000 miles with my current gears. 25% more wear on the drivetrain.

I kinda said that wrong. Traveling 100,000 miles with 4.10 gears puts the same wear on my engine as traveling 125,000 with 3.08 gears. I get 25,000 more miles per 100,000 miles out of my engine's life.

Hey Bill,

Amen. I told Tallywhacker awhile back that is most of us had the power under the hoods of our vehicles that he has under the "hood" of that PC, we'd all be turning heads.

I'm using the simlar but for the Intel PIII CPU Abit VP6 board, which also has the RAID array (0,1 & 0+1) capability onboard along with dual CPU's, though I've not implemented the RAID or second CPU yet. It feels rather puny at it's lowly 933 Mhz compared to what Talleywhacker's running.

I had been using ASUS boards for years with rock-solid reliabilty and relatively few reboots under Windoze, but after several rounds with numerous examples of the newer ASUS CUSL2 boards, this Abit board is far more stable & a much better choice. Given it's onboard RAID capabilities for it's cost, in either Athlon or Intel "flavors", they both seem to be real winners.

Mike... GO RAID!!! Sorta like adding a supercharger to your pc! If you do, just make sure you defrag ALOT, otherwise it's just as slow as a single good 7.2k drive.

I still have my ol' Abit BE6-II Rev. 1. It has the HPT366 controller for ATA66 but it didn't come with Raid, however, I hacked the board and reflashed the controllers bios and it has Raid capabilities

In reality I have 512mb of PC-150 ram, but I have a 128mb Ramdrive that I use strictly for your internet cache and files, as well as my TEMP files. It speeds up your internet a bit because it stores the files on your ram(which is alot faster) instead of your harddrive(which is slower than ram). But since I do that... it bumps my system memory down to 384mb.

If you'd like I can help you set a Ramdrive up(if you don't know how).
