Again thanks for the info Mike.

Hey Mikey88..
That time is a full second off of mine , and I can really only see that you have the underdrive pulleys and the superchip. Have you had any battery charging problems with the underdrive pulleys? Guess that's why people get the superchip and forget everything else.

I never had any problems as of yet with the pullies and they have been on for aprox. a year or so. Last year I ran 16.073 and since then I added the Flowmaster duel chamber exhaust which I think they are the 40's like yours. I still want more and I'm currently debating what my next mod will be. Maybe headers, but I'm still not sure. What was the weather like when you ran?

Mikey88..
The weather was clear and about 78'F, just a small cross breeze.

I'm seriously considering the rearend change to 4.10 followed by a superchip. If I'm not happy after that, then I'll look at the pulleys.

What is the altitude at your track? I think that will effect speeds

Mikey88...
Altitude is about 50-100 feet. The central valley in california is pretty darn flat and not much above sealevel. When you drag do you leave it in drive with Overdrive off? Or do you start in 1 or 2 and shift up? Man if I could get your time, my dodge buddy would just quit racing me

I left it in drive with OD off. The superchip makes the rpm's higher before it shifts and it shifts better. Here is a breakdown of my best run: R/T .736, 60 foot 2.225, 330 6.485, 1/8 10.024 @ 70.31and 1/4 was 15.651 @ 86.12 mph. That was my first run and R/T was alot better on my other 2 runs. I think you would lose time if you shift it yourself although I never tried that. I just know that is difficult to do. Again I was a little surprised also. My other two times were 15.722 and 15.15.661. Also I would do some serious research before using 4:10 gears. They will help your 1/4 time but may not be good for daily activities. Good luck and I'm looking for 15.3 from here on.

Well I have something to shoot for too . About the 4.10 gears...I've used the rpm calculator at randy's ring and pinion website and it calulated w/in 30 rpm's of what I'm running now. I plugged in for the 4.10 gears and it would put me @ ~2300 rpm @ 75 mph. I really don't cruise much faster than that, usually . Thanks for the concern though. That's why I love this message board, more people are here for the common good of other Ford owners.

That's not bad, I thought it would be higher. I think I would do it under those circumstances. What does it cost to do a gear change and what gains do you expect in the 1/4?

Mikey88,
I've been quoted from $475 up to $800. It's up to you and where you feel comfortable. Make sure they are using US made gears (imported gears are for sh*t), such as richmond gears, US Gears, etc.. and ask about warrenties. This what was expressed upon me when I started looking.

The gains should be 0.5 to almost a full second (again, this is what I've heard). Plus it will make your truck feel very zippy. If it happens soon, I'll let you know how it goes.

Yo Fitty one..
Can one do their own gear change?
I mean, it does not seem to be that complicated??
How about an aluminum driveshaft, would that make much of a difference??

PS: still working on my schedule, see you guys soon!

Late...

HI guys,

Just a couple of quick comments..........

Yes, one can do their own gear ratio change in the differential in these vehicles if you have proper service manuals, but I wouldn't suggest doing so unless you are a qualified expert, someone who does this for a living. There are too many things that can go wrong if you're not personally familiar & experienced with setting up differentials, so it's well worth paying the labor charge to get them installed with a warranty. Life is too short for shortcuts.

With regards to using an aluminum driveshaft, that is done because a "normal" driveshaft would warp, bend, or fail, rather than being done solely for a performance gain. It will reduce the rotating mass, so it could potentially make a very small (negligible) difference in your 1/4 mile ET's, but it's never going to be enough to justify the expense from a performance standpoint. If you do it so lighten the vehicle and just to get a stronger driveshaft, fine, but don't do it if your sole reason is getting quicker acceleration, as you'll be disappointed.

How about a Throttle Body or Mass Air Flow meter. Is that any help for performance on these trucks ( F-150)? The guys on the L page swear by both of these

Cool

Hey NoDrive Fiddy Five...
For what I understand the process is easy, but it needs to be done right. There are lots of adjustments that need to be done in order for the rear diff. to work properly. That's why most get it done at a rearend shop. I'm thinking of River City Differential (off of sunrise). I was quoted (From Sean) $475 + tax for the job of putting in 4.10 gears (using US Gears), but they only give a 90 day warrenty. Maybe I can pay a bit more for a year or more warrenty.

About the aluminum drive shaft, I don't know. Sounds expensive

If you think you can go, post here or in the other Drags at Sac 4/11/2001.

Hi Mikey,

Please see my response to that question in the other thread where you posted it, as that goes into detail and will explain it for you. Let me know if you have further questions after reading that response, ok? Thanks!
