Hey all...
Myself and a buddy, and possibly CarzyaboutF150 are going to the Sacramento Raceway open drag night (4/4/2001) for some runs. If any of you are in the area (like NoDrive55-you can get out of a meeting to race :P), come on down.

Yo, fitty-one-fittyPHD
Man in the worst way do I want to go, and I will!
In due time though I can make arrangements to "get out" of my "Christian" meetings, at least for one night... unfortunately there are alot of others who depend on me that I be there.
That is neither here or there, the point is I will make it there.
And Sudwerks...On Expo blvd?
yeah, good micro-brews, and decent eats...I'm by there every other day as I do work for the Golden 1 credit Union next door.
If you want to do linch some day...just ley me know.
PS..I went to Les Schwab Tire store today...
Looking at some SVT wheels, and some nice fat Toyo's?
And this might sound stupid...
But even thinking of throwing a Bell Tech lowering kit on her???
Get it? she's a 4x4...
Am I insane, just plain stupid, or is it not too far fetched? what do you think?

Hey NoDrive-Fiddy-Five...
No pressure! If you have prior commitments, I totally understand. My current position here at the university is all about commitments to meetings and deadline, etc. I was just giving you some crap
.
I was just talking with CrazyaboutF150 about how we modify the practicality right out of our trucks for the sake of modifing. But I guess that's half the fun. The change you are thinking about should look cool. I would love to get some SVT or Harley rims and put on a 2/4" drop. Just don't have the $$$
.
I'm going over to the Dealer today to get my radiator situation fixed. Check out the thread on Ford installing the wrong radiatiors (under engines). Check yours to make sure you got what you paid for. I'll post on the radiator thread on what happens.
yeah, sudwerks is good (the one in Davis is about the same as on Expo). I like to make my own, got my degree with brewing beer in lab (long story)
Let me know if you are going to the drag tomorrow.

Well my cherry has been popped (drag strip virgin)!! Man that was fun, especially smoking my Dodge buddy
in a grudge match by 0.9 seconds. Now I have to say it wasn't much a race since he has an open dif. but still felt good after all the smack talk. So I'll let my numbers talk for themselves.
Run #1
Reaction: 1.372 (ok, don't laugh, my 1st time)
I1: 2.365
I2: 6.755
I3: 10.443
I3 (MPH): 66.473
I4: 13.691
E.T.: 16.511 @ 79.678 MPH
Run #2
Reaction: 0.989 (see a bit better)
I1: 2.548
I2: 7.045
I3: 10.767
I3 (MPH): 66.829
I4: 13.921
E.T.: 16.617 @ 83.310 MPH
I was told I would run mid 16's, so I'm fairly pleased. I can't wait to go out again.

Hey Mike...
The truth is I let off a bit towards the end and then I realized I wasn't finished (D'OH)
, so I stomped it back down. Guess I was caught up in the moment. That's why the second time through I kept the hammer down all the way. Also I spun just a bit during the second run. Either way it was a fun learning exp.
A question for you Mike..I have that jetchip I borrowed from Crazyabout150 installed. How would the superchip reacted at the drags vs the jetchip? Now the sad part is I can really see how all those mods that, say, Da HP freak has, starts shaving time off your 1/4 mile runs. The $$$ gets staggering. But that's why they call it a hobby/obsession
. If you have any advice at this point, lay it on me. I was thinking superchip and gears.

Hi 5150,
Hmmm, the mph on your second run was *much* higher than in the first run, by almost 4 mph, which is a bunch, which the ET difference was very little, that's a bit odd. Did you perhaps not run it as hard that first run, or did the temperature drop considerably between runs, etc., just curious? Your mph in the second run is more appropriate for that vehicle, of course.
Congratulations on your first time at the track, and don't worry too much about your reaction times, that will get better with more experience.

Hi 5150,
Actually, it's somewhat common for first-timers to let off when they see the first of the 3 sets of lights on the top end, and that can have a big effect on trap speeds. The first and last lights at the end of the 1/4 mile are usually 132 ft. apart (a set of 3 lights spaced at 66 ft. intervals), and are used to measure the speed of the vehicle thru the traps. The middle light, which is 66 ft. after the first light and an equal distance before the last light, is the light that stops the timer for your elapsed time.
With regards to what the Superchip is going to do for your ET's, it should knock off anywhere from 3 to perhaps as much as 5 tenths of a second on your truck, which is very respectable for it's cost, of course. Neal the HP Freak's Superchip knocked off .61 from his ET's for example, which is a little bit more than the "average" range of .3-.5 seconds.
Doing a gear ratio change is something that is very commonly done when drag racing, so that is certainly a viable way to drop ET's some more. What we usually do with "daily drivers" is to do all our power-adding modifications first, and then if we still can't get the desired performance, then go ahead and do a gear change. Drag racers are usually just the opposite, and will do a gear change first.
This is up to you of course. If you don't care about turning more rpms when cruising, then a gear ratio change can be a good way to get quicker acceleration, you bet!
One thing to keep in mind is that if you do a gear ratio change, you'll need to have a custom program done in the Superchip to get your speedometer, odometer, & shift points back to where they should be, as a gear change will throw all of that off, and can only be corrected in the programming in 1999 & newer F-150's. That can be done either to begin with, or later on as an update, as the Superchip can always be updated, thanks to it's flash design.
Just give us a shout to go over the details whenever you like, & good luck!

As always Mike, a great amount of information (how many words/minute can you type now? :P).
A follow up question, if you don't mind. Should I have ford zap my computer to adjust for the new rearend too? If so what would that cost?
Thanks Mike!!

Hey Stifford...
Great to hear from a fellow Davisite!!!
I run the IR-4 lab over in Environmental Toxicology.
We should meet some time to grunt at our trucks. Let me know at mjhengel@ucdavis.edu

It's pretty exciting the first time, I agree. I ran Friday night with just about the same truck you have and I ran 15.661 at 86.12 mph. 60 foot times were 2.225 with very little wheel spin. I was hoping to break 16 and I was very happy with these times. Out mods are similiar also. The weather was about 70 degrees and the humidity was high. Good luck

Hi 5150,
A Ford dealer can do that only if you change to a gear ratio that was offered by the factory on your vehicle to begin with, and they don't go any shorter (numerically higher) than 3.73, so from that standpoint, I wouldn't.
Also, as soon as you run a performance program installed on your computer, the internal chip with it's factory wouldn't be in effect anyway.
So my answer to this in your case is no, don't bother.
